Holzminden showcases its diversity through a range of themes and places: Sensoria explores smell and taste, while museums and historic sites across the district tell stories of glass, porcelain and architecture. The Weser Valley also features the ruins of Polle Castle and the Weser Cycle Path, a route for cycling through the region. The contrast between the town and the district offers different perspectives on a trip: sensory discoveries, industrial history, castle architecture and landscapes each stand on their own and can be prioritised according to your interests.

Smell, taste and the history of glass

In Holzminden, Sensoria explores smell and taste across 600 square metres in ten themed areas. It is Europe’s first museum of its kind. Alongside sensory experiences, the museum also covers the history of vanillin: it was first synthesised in Holzminden, and Sensoria explores its worldwide success. This brings the subjects of smell and taste together with a specific industrial history under one roof. Visitors particularly interested in this connection will find a different perspective here than in a museum focused primarily on historical objects or production processes.

The GrĂĽnenplan Glass Museum traces the development of the GrĂĽnenplan glassworks from its founding in 1744 to the modern production of Deutsche Spezialglas AG. It explains production processes using tools, glass pieces and photographs. Everyday life in the past is also explored: visitors learn what life was like for a glassblower, how glassworks workers once lived and what their homes were like, and what unusual role canaries played in GrĂĽnenplan. The exhibition thus connects the history of a glassworks with insights into work and home life. Sensoria and the Glass Museum have different focuses: one explores smell, taste and vanillin, the other glassmaking and life around the glassworks.

Castles, porcelain and the Weser Valley

Bevern Castle is a four-winged Renaissance complex. It was built between 1603 and 1612 around a square courtyard. A moat, two bridges and a castle garden complete the grounds. These features illustrate the castle’s layout: four wings enclose the courtyard, while the moat and bridges form further elements of the complex. This architectural perspective differs from the collections and production history that take centre stage in the region’s museums.

The Museum at FĂĽrstenberg Castle displays porcelain spanning more than 265 years of the FĂśRSTENBERG porcelain manufactory. The grounds of FĂĽrstenberg Castle also include a viewing platform 80 metres above the Weser. From there, panoramic views extend across the Weser Valley and into the three-state border region. The collection and landscape offer two different points of interest: the long history of porcelain and the view across the valley.

In Polle, the castle ruins stand atop a hill about 25 metres high, above the village in the Weser Valley. Their setting creates a different impression from the castles in Bevern and FĂĽrstenberg: here, ruins on a hill dominate the view, while the other sites are characterised by Renaissance architecture and the porcelain museum, respectively. Visitors can choose attractions by theme, distinguishing between architectural form, collections and a striking location in the Weser Valley.

Getting your bearings and cycling

Amelungsborn Monastery is located on the B64 between Negenborn and Eschershausen in the district of Holzminden. This location helps place the monastery in relation to the two named towns. It adds another specific point of reference in the district to the stories of its museums and castles.

The Weser Cycle Path is promoted in Holzminden for cycling trips through the region. The bicycle parking garage is right on the Weser Cycle Path at Johannismarkt, near the Sensoria Tourist Information Centre and the town centre. For finding your way around, the cycle path, bicycle parking garage, Tourist Information Centre and town centre are all mentioned as nearby reference points. Cycling adds another perspective to a trip alongside the cultural sites: the Weser Cycle Path offers routes through the region, while Sensoria, the glassworks and the castles each have their own distinct focus.
