Discover Holzminden through its fragrances, city history and cycling routes along the Weser. Sensoria – House of Fragrances and Flavours brings the subject to life in an exhibition and on its rooftop; the Fragrant City Walk draws attention to the city’s buildings and squares.
Fragrances and City History
Sensoria, the interactive museum in Holzminden, presents its exhibition across three floors and 600 m². Ten themed areas and up to 60 different fragrances explore the diversity of smell and taste. The exhibition is suitable for visitors of all ages, offering a cultural experience that differs from a walk around the city.
Fragrances and flavours are also at the heart of Sensoria’s rooftop: fragrant herbs, unusual plants and an interactive quiz invite visitors to explore the themes outdoors with all their senses. The museum visit and rooftop offer different highlights—an exhibition spanning several floors in one case, and plants, fragrances and a quiz in the open air in the other.
The Fragrant City Walk features 17 scent markers that lead to notable buildings and attractive squares. Along the way, it provides insights into the city’s history and the significance of fragrances and flavours in Holzminden. Historic architecture and charming lanes in the old town also shape the cityscape. Those who prefer to explore the city’s history on a walk through town will find a different focus here than at Sensoria.
Cycling and Getting Around
Holzminden lies directly on the Weser Cycle Path; the EuroVelo Route R1 and the Weser Cycle Path also intersect here. Mountain biking offers a different kind of ride: Holzminden has varied routes and challenging trails in the forested landscape of Solling-Vogler Nature Park. The trails offer opportunities to experience nature; conditions may vary from one trail to another.
For a stop along the way, the bicycle parking facility at Johannismarkt is right on the Weser Cycle Path and just a few steps from the city centre. It offers cyclists a convenient and secure place to park. Its location makes the bicycle parking facility easy to consider both when navigating the cycle route and when visiting the city centre.
Holzminden railway station is served by NordWestBahn and is about a ten-minute walk from the city centre. Bus routes 501, 502 and 509 operate within the city. Check the latest bus service information before travelling; the route numbers alone do not indicate a specific departure time.
Market and Seminars
The regular “Colourful Market of Fragrances and Flavours” offers an aromatic taste experience, with many tasting stalls. As specific market dates are announced separately, it is advisable to check the dates before visiting.
Fragrance and flavour seminars in Holzminden offer, among other things, the opportunity to create your own perfume. Dates and availability may vary. The market and seminars explore flavours in different ways: through tastings at stalls in one case, and creative work with perfume in the other.
In the wider Holzminden travel region
Beyond the city, the wider Holzminden travel region offers further cultural and landscape highlights. Polle Castle Ruins stand on a hilltop about 25 metres high above the municipality of Polle in the Weser Valley. Amelungsborn Monastery lies on the B64 between Negenborn and Eschershausen in the district of Holzminden.
Fürstenberg Castle combines a museum with scenic views: the museum showcases more than 265 years of porcelain from the FÜRSTENBERG porcelain manufactory. The complex also includes an observation platform 80 metres above the Weser, with panoramic views of the Weser Valley and the Dreiländereck region, where three states meet. Bevern Castle is a four-winged Renaissance complex built between 1603 and 1612 around a square courtyard with a moat, two bridges and a castle garden. Its architectural features and history offer another cultural and historical highlight in the wider travel region.
At the Grünenplan Glass Museum, visitors can trace the development of the Grünenplan glassworks from its founding in 1744 to the modern production of Deutsche Spezialglas AG. Tools, glass pieces and photographs explain the production processes. Other topics include the daily life of a glassblower, the former living and working conditions of the glassworks’ workers, and the unusual role of canaries in Grünenplan.
