Hehlen Castle, the Immanuel Church and the local history room each offer a different perspective: architectural history, church architecture and the development of the town. Hehlen therefore offers several specific topics to help you choose your destination, each of which can be explored individually. Another landmark is the Loccum-Volkenroda Pilgrimage Route, which passes the church.
Hehlen Castle and the view from the Weser Route
Hehlen Castle was built by Fritz von der Schulenburg between 1579 and 1584. The almost unadorned four-winged building is surrounded by a moat. Its construction period, patron and form give the complex a distinctive historical profile. The term “four-winged building” describes its design; together with the moat, these are the castle’s defining architectural features.
The main route of the Weser Cycle Path offers a different perspective: Hehlen Castle can be seen from Daspe, on the opposite bank of the Weser. This viewpoint is specifically associated with Daspe and complements a visit to the castle with a view from the other side of the river. When planning your trip, you can therefore distinguish between the architectural focus in Hehlen and this viewpoint along the route.
The Immanuel Church and the pilgrimage route
Built in 1699, the Immanuel Church in Hehlen is distinctive in the wider area for its central-plan architecture. Alongside the castle, it is another architectural highlight, with its own design and a different period of origin. Those interested in historic architecture will find two clearly distinct approaches in Hehlen.
The Loccum-Volkenroda Pilgrimage Route passes the Immanuel Church. The church thus brings together two different points of interest: its architecture and the route of the pilgrimage trail past it.
The local history room and the history of the town
The Hehlen local history room traces the development of the town in a 17th-century count’s paper mill. Its scope ranges from prehistory through the von der Schulenburg family’s castle to industrialisation, including the still-active leather works and limestone quarrying. This sequence connects different periods in the town’s history rather than focusing solely on the castle.
Hehlen is therefore a place where both individual buildings and a broader view of the town’s development take centre stage. The castle and church can be distinguished by their architectural forms and dates of origin; the local history room also places the castle within the town’s longer history. This provides useful guidance if you would like to focus your trip on cultural history rather than a single attraction.
More cultural highlights in the wider Holzminden destination
The wider Holzminden destination offers additional, distinct points of interest. Polle Castle Ruins stand on a hill about 25 metres high above the municipality of Polle in the Weser Valley. Bevern Castle is a four-winged Renaissance complex built between 1603 and 1612 around a square courtyard, with a moat, two bridges and a castle garden. In comparison, Hehlen Castle makes its own architectural statement with its construction period of 1579 to 1584, its almost unadorned four-winged building and its moat.
Museums also broaden the choice in the wider Holzminden destination: the Fürstenberg Castle Museum presents porcelain from more than 265 years of the FÜRSTENBERG porcelain manufactory. The castle complex includes a viewing platform 80 metres above the Weser, offering panoramic views of the Weser Valley and the tri-border region. The Grünenplan Glass Museum traces the history of the Grünenplan glassworks from its founding in 1744 to modern production at Deutsche Spezialglas AG. Tools, glass pieces and photographs explain the production processes; the museum also explores a glassblower’s everyday life, the former lives of glassworks workers and the unusual role of canaries in Grünenplan.
These examples from Holzminden broaden the picture to include other buildings and the histories of porcelain and glass, without attributing them to Hehlen.
