Munster offers several ways to shape your stay: the history of German tanks, outdoor trails and a route through the town centre. The routes also differ considerably in length. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether to focus on an exhibition, time in the countryside or a short walk.

Tank Museum and Munster’s oldest residential building

The German Tank Museum Munster covers the history of German tanks from their origins in the 19th century to the present day. The exhibition displays more than 150 large exhibits in five halls covering over 10,000 square metres. Its thematic scope therefore spans several eras, and the exhibition is also spread across a large area. For travellers interested in this subject, the museum is a clearly defined cultural attraction in Munster.

The Ollershof offers a different perspective on the town’s history. It is the oldest surviving residential building in Munster. While the museum covers a broad historical period through the history of German tanks, the focus at the Ollershof is a single surviving residential building. The two sites therefore have different thematic emphases.

Dethlinger Heath and outdoor trails

Dethlinger Heath lies southeast of Munster and is a place for hiking, walking, photography and relaxation. Its heather bloom depends on the weather and is usually at its most splendid in August and September. If you want to make the bloom a focus of your stay, it is best to allow some flexibility in your plans: its exact appearance depends on the weather.

One longer route option is the 11.1-kilometre Ă–rtze Trail. It runs between Munster town centre and Dethlinger Heath and is suitable for cycling. Its length provides a specific reference point when choosing a cycling route, without indicating a particular journey time. For a much shorter route, there is the DENK-PARCOURS: it loops around the MĂĽhlenteich in the town centre, is about one kilometre long, has nine stations and starts below the market square. The route lengths clearly distinguish the two options: the trail is the shorter loop, while the Ă–rtze Trail is the longer cycling route.

Excursion destination and cycling church

The FlĂĽggenhofsee recreation area is an excursion destination for the whole family. Facilities there include a large beach, a pirate-themed playground and a barbecue area. The focus is therefore on several different attractions within this excursion destination. If you are looking for a family-friendly option in Munster, FlĂĽggenhofsee is easy to distinguish from the cultural and historical attractions of the Tank Museum and the Ollershof.

St. Martin’s Schafstall Church is also of interest to cycling tourists: as a cycling church, it serves as a rest stop. It is open to visitors daily from 10:00 to 18:00 from April to October. Outside this period, it is open on Sundays for services at 10:00. Check the seasonal opening hours before you arrive if you are planning a visit.

The wider travel area: Heidekreis

The wider Heidekreis destination has kilometres of signposted routes for cycling, hiking, Nordic walking and horse riding, leading to worthwhile destinations. Individual routes may change, so it is advisable to check the latest route information when planning a specific trip. Another option for exploring the landscape and getting around in Heidekreis is Wilseder Berg. It is 169 metres high and the highest elevation in the North German Plain. The area around it is almost car-free: cars can only use access roads to car parks at locations around the nature reserve. Otherwise, people get around on foot or by bicycle. Check the parking situation before making specific plans.
