Brunsberg is 129 metres high and lies in the northern part of the LĂĽneburg Heath Nature Park. Broad heathland with birch and pine trees characterises the hill; it is also designated as a nature reserve. The landscape and variety of trails provide a practical starting point for planning a stay in Buchholz.

Heathland and hiking trails

Höllenschlucht is a wooded dry valley with a short walking trail to Brunsberg. There are also numerous circular hiking trails in and around Buchholz that offer a chance to experience the landscape. When choosing a hike, you can distinguish between a short trail to Brunsberg and longer routes: the Buchholz Circular Trail 1 is listed as 20.98 kilometres long.

The Heidschnuckenweg trail is also connected with Buchholz. This long-distance hiking route runs for 223 kilometres over 13 stages between Fischbeker Heide near Hamburg and Celle; one of its access points is in Buchholz. For the Buchholz–Handeloh section, the trail begins at Buchholz station on Rütgersstraße. Der Schafstall café-restaurant in Büsenbachtal near Handeloh is around 800 metres from the trail. The route length and access point can help you plan your stages; you can factor in the distance to the restaurant when planning a possible detour.

Culture, history and food

Seppensen Open-Air Museum is dedicated to local history. Holm Mill in Holm stands on the Seeve, whose waters have powered its wheel for centuries. Events are held in the restored historic mill setting, including classical music performances and baking days. In Buchholz itself, Die Empore is a centrally located concert, theatre and events venue.

For a glimpse of everyday life in Buchholz, visit the weekly market in the town centre, where you will find fresh produce, flowers, selected accessories and a food area. Cafés, international cuisine and creative street-food options add to the choices. This gives you the option of including culture and a meal break in your day’s plans, rather than making time outdoors your sole focus.

Cycling and other activities

There are also various options for cycling trips. The “Around Buchholz in the Nordheide” route (No. 29) is 32.03 kilometres long. Rivers and meadows, heathland and the Harburg Hills are among the landscape features you can enjoy while cycling in the area. Buchholz-Nordheide Golf Club has an 18-hole course, while Buchholz Climbing Centre offers climbing for different ability levels. Alongside hiking, you can therefore choose from a range of activities, including cycling, golf and climbing.

Getting here and choosing a hotel

The Heidebahn Erixx RB 38 runs hourly between Handeloh, BĂĽsenbachtal and Buchholz. Direct connections to Metronom trains towards Hamburg and Bremen are possible. Buchholz also has transport links for trips to the LĂĽneburg Heath Nature Park. If you are travelling by train, check the timetable for your specific travel date, especially if a connection is important for the rest of your journey.

When looking for a hotel in Buchholz, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay, such as hiking, culture or a mix of activities in town and excursions. This lets you choose accommodation based on your actual plans, rather than deciding based only on a general theme.
