The Elbe to the north and, for the most part, the Ilmenau to the south form Drage’s boundaries. Its location between the rivers sets the scene, but the area’s local character is shaped by more than water. Agriculture and livestock farming shape the Elbe marshes; fruit and vegetables have traditionally been grown along the Elbe dike. Numerous oxbow lakes bear witness to former dike breaches. The Elbe in the marshes offers a variety of impressions of the river landscape. Here, agricultural land use meets traces of the river’s history.
The Elbe, marshland and Stover beach
Stover Elbe beach can be up to 100 metres wide and has been attracting visitors and tourists for decades. Its potential width and longstanding appeal make it a distinctive highlight for anyone who wants to experience Drage chiefly in connection with the Elbe. The agricultural marshland and the history of the dikes add further themes to this riverside view for your trip.
Local history and culture
Drage’s district of Stove was first documented in 1162. The Marschkunst-Kunstmarsch initiative was launched by local artists and craftspeople. A recurring outdoor art exhibition takes place in Fahrenholz, bringing art and its surroundings together. Drager Faslam is also a traditional local festival. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the dates in advance.
Local produce and accommodation
Fruit and vegetables have traditionally been grown along the Elbe dike. Visitors can also buy fruit directly from producers at roadside stalls. The selection at individual stalls may vary, so treat a purchase as a flexible addition rather than a fixed part of your itinerary.
Stover Strand Camping offers pitches for motorhomes and caravans with views of the Elbe. There are also two restaurants and a supermarket on site. Check the current facilities and services before your trip if they are important to your accommodation plans.
Cycling and getting there
For cycling tours along the Elbe near Stove, the Elbe Cycle Route is a good choice. In the wider Harburg travel destination, a dense network of cycling routes runs through Harburg district, including 1,000 kilometres of signposted tourist cycle routes. The specific cycling recommendation for Stove and the wider cycling context at district level therefore offer different perspectives for planning.
Bus route 4405 runs through Stove between Winsen and Niedermarschacht. Route 5405 travels from Lüneburg to Niedermarschacht. Check the timetable and route before travelling, as transport services may change. On summer weekends, a free Elbe shuttle with a bicycle trailer runs from Hamburg-Bergedorf to the region.
