In Wangerland, cycling opens up a perspective between the North Sea coast and the inland countryside. More than 200 kilometres of flat cycling routes can be planned individually using the junction map; the cycling network is also part of the international North Sea Cycle Route system. Along the routes, possible sights include salt marshes and wading birds, and, with a little luck, small crabs. We recommend checking the latest map when planning your tour.
Cycling through Mederns
The Schillig–Hooksiel circular route passes through Mederns. Mederns is also a cycling destination from Hohenkirchen. This means you can include the village in your cycling plans from different directions, without combining the tours into a single route. Mederns and Friederikensiel are also marked on the official Wangerland cycling map in connection with the junction system.
Mederns is one of the small villages with typically Frisian charm. A distinctive local landmark is the cemetery, which is situated on a warft. This raised mound connects the local landscape with a specific feature of the village. Anyone interested in Frisian villages and their character will find another perspective on Mederns here, alongside the cycling routes.
The Wadden Sea, beaches and culture in Wangerland
At the broader Wangerland destination, the Wangerland National Park House in Minsen offers further insights into the region. Its approximately 250 m² of exhibition space uses multimedia features to bring the Wadden Sea to life; renewable energy and climate protection are also exhibition topics. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.
Horumersiel beach offers a different coastal perspective: its soft grassy surface makes it a green alternative to the sandy beach right on the North Sea. In Hooksiel, the Shell Museum displays exhibits ranging from tiny snails to shells larger than the palm of a hand. The bronze sculpture “Seewiefken” by Karin Mennen stands in Norderaltendeich near Minsen-Förrien. It is a landmark of Wangerland and also adorns the municipal coat of arms.
Paths and water at Wangermeer
At Wangermeer in Hohenkirchen, various hiking trails invite you to enjoy extended walks and varied views of the lake’s natural surroundings. A large, round island lies in the middle of Wangermeer. It can be reached on foot or by bicycle via a 325-metre-long promenade bridge. The lakeside trails and access to the island offer two different ways to explore the area.
Wildlife is also part of the Wangermeer landscape: many bird species, including rare ones, have settled there, and the lake provides a habitat for a wide variety of fish. Wangermeer and Hooksmeer also offer water sports that are independent of the tides. The activities available and how they are operated may vary by season.
