St. Mary’s Church: historic furnishings and visiting hours

St. Mary’s Church in Oldorf dates back to the 13th century. It contains several items of furnishings that can be dated: a Crucifixion altar and a baptismal font date from the 14th or 15th century, while the pulpit canopy dates from the 17th century. The alms box bears the year 1696. The church can therefore be explored not only through its age, but also through the span of time represented by its furnishings. Visitors interested in church art and historical details will find several specific points of interest here.

Visits are possible from Easter until the end of the autumn school holidays, Monday to Friday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Outside this period, visits are by appointment. Check the latest visiting information before travelling, as opening hours may vary by season.

More to explore in the wider Wangerland region

In the wider Wangerland destination, cultural sites, coastal scenery and inland waters offer a range of attractions. In Minsen, the Wangerland National Park Centre has around 250 square metres of exhibition space, with multimedia opportunities to experience and discover the Wadden Sea. The exhibition also covers renewable energy and climate protection. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.

The beach in Horumersiel is a green beach right on the North Sea: its soft grass offers an alternative to a sandy beach. The range of exhibits at the Shell Museum in Hooksiel spans everything from tiny snails to shells larger than the palm of your hand. Another regional landmark is the bronze sculpture “Seewiefken” by Karin Mennen, located in Norderaltendeich near Minsen-Förrien. It is regarded as a landmark of Wangerland and also appears on the municipal coat of arms.

The Wangerland outdoors: trails, water and nature

Several hiking trails around the Wangermeer in Hohenkirchen invite you to enjoy extended walks and varied views of the lake’s natural surroundings. A large, round island lies in the middle of the Wangermeer and can be reached on foot or by bicycle via a 325-metre-long promenade bridge. Many bird species, including rare ones, have settled around the lake; it is also home to a wide variety of fish.

For cycling tours through the Wangerland, the junction map lets you plan more than 200 kilometres of flat routes to suit your preferences. As route information may change, use the latest local map when planning. Another option is the Wangerland Pilgrimage Trail, whose scenery includes dikes, wind turbines, green surroundings and North Sea breezes.

The inland lakes Wangermeer and Hooksmeer offer water sports that are not dependent on the tides. Specific activities and operating arrangements may vary by season. So check the latest information if water sports are part of your travel plans.
