Salt marshes by the dike, a cycling route with twelve climate stations and the history of Neustadtgödens give Sande several distinct attractions. The town lies directly on Jade Bay and is surrounded by green fields and meadows. When planning your trip, you can focus on nature, outdoor activities or culture.

Salt Marshes and Nature Trails

At Cäciliengroden, the salt marshes lie directly in front of the dike. They provide a habitat for around 2,300 plant and animal species. This makes the coastal landscape a destination for anyone interested in the diversity of plants and animals. Another nature trail runs through Gut Altmarienhausen, where a biosphere hiking trail follows the old Graft. The salt marshes and the trail along the Graft offer different highlights: biodiversity in one place, a route alongside a distinctive landscape feature in the other.

Cycling and Leisure at Sander See

The Sande Climate Trail combines cycling with climate history. At twelve stations, historical examples show how people in and around Sande responded to climate change. The cycling route was developed in cooperation with the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea Biosphere Reserve. So this trail focuses not only on cycling, but also on the subject matter covered at its stations.

Other cycling routes through Sande include stretches along the Ems-Jade Canal, through fields and meadows, and along the dike. This offers a different perspective from the Climate Trail stations: the described stretches range from the canal to the surrounding countryside. When comparing cycling routes, the main difference is their focus: climate history on the one hand, and stretches through the landscape on the other.

The Sander See recreation area has a sandy beach as well as football and volleyball courts. There is also a designated running track. This range of options brings several leisure activities together in one place, without requiring you to make any single activity the focus of your stay. Which options you include in your plans depends on whether you would rather spend the day at the beach, playing ball or running.

Neustadtgödens: Religion and Linen Weaving

Five places of worship stand within an intact village ensemble in Neustadtgödens. The museum in the Landrichterhaus documents the town’s religious history. Its economic development also has a distinct historical theme: a significant linen-weaving industry contributed to its prosperity and was operated mainly by Mennonite refugees from Holland. The town brings together religious history, an ensemble of places of worship and the history of linen weaving.

Plan Your Dining and Accommodation

At Café Marienstübchen, you can enjoy homemade cake and East Frisian tea. Travellers with motorhomes can use a site with 20 pitches in Altmarienhausen, next to the canoe and cycling station. Check whether a pitch is available before you travel; the number of pitches does not indicate current occupancy.

Sande can be reached by train, by boat via the Ems-Jade Canal, or via JadeWeserAirport in Mariensiel. For road travel, the route is via the A 29, with access via the A 28 and B 436 providing additional connections. Check connections for your travel date in advance, especially if you are arriving by train or boat. This lets you plan your journey around the mode of transport that best suits your stay.
