A church built from erratic boulders, a moor with clear rules for paths, and routes with distinct itineraries give Bockhorn a distinctive character. The town’s history around the market square and an adventure pool add to its appeal. When planning your stay, you can focus on culture, landscapes or water-based activities.

Getting here and finding your way

The B 437 skirts the western side of Bockhorn’s main town and connects it to the A 29. Bockhorn is 10 kilometres from Varel. Via the A 29, Wilhelmshaven is about 20 minutes away and Oldenburg about 30 minutes. These travel times are approximate and may vary.

Church and local history

St. Cosmas and Damian’s Church is a typical Frisian church. It was built around 1200 from erratic boulders on an artificially raised mound. Its organ also has a specific historical connection: in 1720, the congregation commissioned organ builder Christian Vater, a student of Arp Schnittger from the Wesermarsch region, to build an organ for Bockhorn Church. The church hosts Sunday and holiday services as well as concerts. Check the schedule before your visit, as it may change.

Hemkensche Kaufmannshaus, also known today as Haus Jürgens, stands on the market square. It dates from the mid-18th century; a door on its south side dates to 1754. The church and the merchant’s house thus mark different historical periods: from medieval church construction to 18th-century building history. The specific details about the house refer to its location, the time it was built and the door on its south side.

Moorland and routes

Bockhorn Moor combines heathland on cutover peat fields, birch trees on geest knolls and rewetted peat cuttings with dead birch trunks. You may enter the moor only on the designated paths marked in red. Follow the local route markings and check conditions before setting out.

The “Around the Urwald” route passes through Bockhorn, Grabstede, Neuenburg and Zetel, and at one point through Neuenburger Holz. Its longest section runs through the moor, away from busy roads. The Geest Tour follows a geest ridge from Zetel through Bockhorn and Varel to Dangast. The two routes therefore differ in their described itineraries: one passes through several towns and into the moor, while the other follows the named route along the geest ridge to Dangast. Check the conditions for each route before setting off.

Adventure pool and activities

Bockhorn Adventure Pool am Urwald has a heated swimming pool with a giant slide, floor bubblers and water cannons. There is also a diving facility with springboards, a 1-metre board and a 3-metre platform. If you’re planning a day at the pool, check the seasonal opening hours and current admission information in advance; both may change.

Friesland on a larger cycling scale

For broader cycling plans, it’s worth looking at Friesland as a wider travel destination. The Tour de Fries is a circular cycle route of around 280 kilometres through Friesland’s characteristic landscapes: the Wadden Sea, green marshes, quiet moors and lively harbour towns. The route has few climbs and follows roads with little traffic; its stages are between 35 and 55 kilometres long. The North Sea Cycle Route runs through Friesland from Harlesiel to Varel. This section links the Frisian hinterland, maritime harbour towns and the vast expanse of the Wadden Sea. Flat routes and good signposting make for relaxed cycling with wide views across the Frisian landscape. Check the current signposting before setting off.
