There are more than 100 museums and museum collections in the Elbe-Weser Triangle; this number may change over time. But the region is not defined by its institutions alone: water, mudflats, marshland, moorland and geest shape its natural landscape. The Elbe-Weser Triangle stretches from Cuxhaven in the north to Verden in the south, and from Bremerhaven in the west to Buxtehude in the east. Those who consider culture and landscape together encounter different scales – from regional natural features to individual buildings, exhibitions and routes.

Landscapes and discoveries

Water, mudflats, marshland, moorland and geest represent the different landscape elements that shape the natural environment. The Natureum Niederelbe offers a concrete exhibition experience, with interactive insights: its exhibitions are spread across two buildings and the Elbe Coastal Park. Individual exhibitions may change, so checking the current programme before your visit can be helpful.

Aquafit Zeven also has its own special appeal: its facilities include five swimming and leisure pools as well as a sauna area. Facilities and operating conditions may change, so check the latest information before visiting.

Buildings, monastery and art

The transporter bridge between Osten and the Basbeck district of Hemmoor began operating in 1909 and is the most distinctive structure in the Elbe-Weser Triangle. Its history offers a different way to explore the region than its museums and collections: here, the focus is on a single structure.

In Zeven, the Kloster Zeven Museum is next to the former Romanesque monastery church of St. Viti. It is the last surviving building of the medieval monastery complex. The church was built between 1141 and around 1158 in the Romanesque style, with a cruciform floor plan. The museum and church thus provide two specific points of reference for the history of the former complex. The museum displays a 500-year-old coin hoard from Heeslingen; its presentation may change due to loans or rearrangements.

The Königin-Christinen-Haus now houses the municipal gallery, which presents changing art exhibitions. Together, Zeven’s historic buildings and this venue for changing art exhibitions offer complementary experiences. The exhibitions on display there vary with the programme.

Worpswede became an artists’ colony in 1889. Today, it has six museums; this number may also change. Guided walks trace the town’s development from a farming village in the Teufelsmoor to an artists’ colony. The walk is followed by a group visit to an art exhibition at a museum. Dates and prices may change, so it is worth checking before making plans.

Travelling on the Moorexpress

The historic Moorexpress offers varied excursions between the artists’ village of Worpswede, the moorland, the geest and the historic Hanseatic town of Stade. There are more than 20 stops where you can visit sights and get to know the region. The number of stops may change if the service is adjusted. For the 2026 season, the Moorexpress also has a bicycle carriage with space for 25 bicycles. Before travelling, check the current facilities, operating days and services.

There are different ways to explore the region: the Moorexpress offers opportunities at several stops, while museums, galleries and buildings focus on individual subjects. Whether you are more interested in landscapes, art or architectural history, the places and activities mentioned offer different ways to get to know the region.
