A signposted 5.2-kilometre circular trail in Vechta passes through the Citadel Park and Wedding Forest and along the Moorbach stream. The Wedding Trail reveals a side of the town that can be explored on foot. The district of Vechta also offers hiking and cycling routes through moorlands, forests and floodplains, museums with a range of historical themes, and destinations such as the House in the Moor in Goldenstedt. Which of these discoveries you visit first can shape the character of your trip.

Hiking and cycling trails in the district of Vechta

The district has 31 hiking routes. They lead through floodplains and moorlands, forests and uplands, and to historical sights and natural monuments. Markings based on the quality criteria of the German Hiking Association and uniform signposting help you find your way along the trails.

The cycling network covers around 870 kilometres. It also includes 16 themed cycling routes, including “Discovering Aristocratic Estates” and “Art, Culture and Nature”. The themes offer different highlights: some focus on historic estates, while others centre on culture and landscape. The Panorama Trail in the Dammer Berge is the longest route in the district’s hiking trail network. The 24-kilometre Cardinal’s Trail connects Damme and Dinklage and is divided into five stations, or four stages. The “Around the Dammer Berge” cycling tour passes through Damme, Holdorf, Neuenkirchen-Vörden and Steinfeld.

You can also plan a circuit through the town of Vechta, using the railway station as the starting point for the Town Circuit. The Wedding Trail, by contrast, offers a signposted route through the Citadel Park and Wedding Forest, continuing along the Moorbach stream. This gives you two different ways to find your bearings: a circuit by vehicle and a specific circular walking trail.

The citadel, museums and commemorative culture

The Museum in the Zeughaus spans a historical period from the Bronze Age through the Middle Ages and the Thirty Years’ War to the building’s more recent past as a prison, which lasted until 1991. The museum tells this story across three floors accessible to visitors with disabilities. Numerous exhibits invite visitors to touch and take part. Alongside the Zeughaus, the Kaponier is the only surviving fortification building from the former Vechta Citadel; today it showcases art from the region.

The Memorial to Human Dignity offers a different and sobering perspective. It commemorates 88 people with disabilities from the district of Vechta who fell victim to the Nazi regime’s murders of patients. The memorial and the information on site are accessible to visitors with disabilities. Those interested in archaeological history can visit ArchäoVisbek in Visbek, an information centre for the archaeology and history of the municipality. It presents historical evidence and finds from recent excavations and was inaugurated in May 2018.

Moorland experiences, a lake and special destinations

The NIZ Goldenstedt Nature Conservation and Information Centre, also known as the “House in the Moor”, offers different ways to experience the moor: a moorland discovery trail, an underground moor tunnel and the Moorbioskopion. There is also an informative guided ride on the moor railway. It lasts around an hour and a half and is pulled by a 11 hp locomotive. The NIZ café serves regional buckwheat specialities such as buckwheat pancakes and buckwheat cake.

In summer, Hartensbergsee Recreation Park offers swimming at a sandy beach and on expansive sunbathing lawns. A mini-golf course with 18 holes is right by the lake. Golf enthusiasts will find a well-maintained 18-hole course at Gut Welpe in the Welper Forest, near Vechta. A short stroll through Bee Park runs between the Old Town Hall and the northern branch of the Vechtaer Moorbach stream; the park also has play and fitness equipment.

A visit with an event in mind

Vechta’s Stoppelmarkt lasts six days. Each year, more than 500 showpeople set up their attractions across the 160,000-square-metre fairground. If you plan to include the fair in your trip, check the event dates in advance.
