Wagenfeld brings together a long local history and moorland experiences. St. Anthony’s Church is more than 200 years old and underwent extensive renovations between June 2003 and January 2004. The preserved Auburg manor house also shapes the town: it serves as Wagenfeld’s cultural centre. The Auburg Cultural Association regularly organises cultural events. If you have a particular date in mind, check the current programme.

Moorland experiences around MOORWELTEN

MOORWELTEN in Wagenfeld is a multimedia experience exploring moors and the climate. Its exhibition covers the moorland habitat, its wildlife and the role of moorland conservation in climate protection. You can combine a visit with walks in Neustädter Moor: a moor railway stop right at MOORWELTEN provides access to the Moorpadd trail and the walking routes there.

The Ströher Moorbahn runs from the moor railway station or the stop at MOORWELTEN to the Moorpadd trail and back through woodland, meadows, heathland and moorland. MOORWELTEN can also arrange moor railway trips with guided excursions through Neustädter Moor. Before your visit, check the railway’s seasonal operating times and the availability of guided trips.

Cycling routes with different themes

Wagenfeld and Ströhen are located in the Diepholz Moor Depression, in DümmerWeserLand and in Dümmer Nature Park. Two cycling routes offer different highlights: the Crane Tour connects Lake Dümmer with MOORWELTEN in Ströhen. Sagenhaftes Wagenfeld leads to twelve places associated with local legends. It is worth checking the details of each route before setting off.

In the wider destination of Diepholz

The district of Diepholz includes two tourism regions and two nature parks. As a broader setting, it offers independent museum and landscape experiences in addition to Wagenfeld’s attractions. The Dümmer Museum in Lembruch presents the nature, landscape and culture of Lake Dümmer—past, present and future. Its “Life in the Water” research station explains the ecology of the Dümmer ecosystem in detail. The museum’s section on the Stone Age at Lake Dümmer features original objects dating from 4,000 to 2,000 BC, as well as reconstructions.

The Syke District Museum, with the Gesseler Gold Hoard Forum, is the district’s museum of cultural and everyday history. It presents everyday life from the Stone Age to the threshold of the present day. The two museums therefore offer different focuses: in Lembruch, Lake Dümmer and its natural, landscape and cultural history take centre stage; in Syke, the focus spans a long period of everyday life.

The district also offers different options for cycling and canoeing. A cycle route guidance system directs recreational cyclists along around 1,700 kilometres of routes. The 137-kilometre Hunte River Cycle Route runs from Elsfleth to Lake DĂĽmmer. The Hunte in the district has been developed as an attractive destination for nature-based tourism; canoes can travel around 105 kilometres of the river from the OsnabrĂĽck region to Oldenburg. Lake DĂĽmmer offers a wide range of recreational activities for sailors and surfers. The regional options are therefore clearly differentiated by activity: a signposted cycling route, canoeing on the Hunte or water sports on the lake.
