Diepholz is located in Dümmer Nature Park and combines city history, culture and outdoor activities. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between places that are open year-round and seasonal or conditional offerings.

Moated Castle and City History

Diepholz Castle is a moated castle dating from the 10th or 11th century. At 43 metres high, its tower is the tallest building in the city and a landmark of Diepholz and the surrounding area. The museum in the castle tower features exhibitions on local history and working life across seven floors. One focus is peat extraction in the local bogs, connecting the history of working life with a feature of the landscape.

Construction work may affect access to the museum. Check the current access situation before your visit. Castle Island, with its rose garden and stela trail, is open year-round; access to the tower may vary.

Culture and City Walk

Diepholz is a cultural centre of the DümmerWeserLand region. Its offerings include a theatre, cinema, museum, gallery and media library. The Diepholz Municipal Theatre has 541 seats. As the programme changes, check the current performances for your travel dates.

The Counts’ Tour is a signposted city walk in Diepholz. Follow the signs on site to find your way. The sculptures at Gänsemarkt are also freely accessible year-round.

Seasonal and Water-Dependent Activities

Müntepark outdoor swimming pool is a seasonal option for spending time outdoors. It has a 50-metre pool, a solar-heated non-swimmer pool with a slide, diving towers, beach volleyball, table tennis and a playground. Check the latest opening information before travelling.

A canoe trip takes you along the water from Lembruch to Diepholz. Check availability with the provider and the water conditions in advance. This makes the trip different from the year-round accessible sculptures at Gänsemarkt: both the date and the water conditions are relevant when planning.

Getting to Diepholz

Diepholz railway station is a regular stop for regional express trains during the day, running hourly between Bremen and Osnabrück. Check the current timetable before travelling. If arriving by car, the Holdorf junction on the A1 is 20 kilometres from Diepholz. The drive via the B214 takes about 20 minutes; actual journey time depends on traffic.

In Diepholz District

The cycling route guidance system in Diepholz District was officially launched in April 2025. It helps recreational cyclists find their way along around 1,700 kilometres of routes. A roughly two-kilometre-long bog nature trail with ten informative stops runs through the Diepholz Moor, making the bog ecosystem accessible in every season. In the district, Lake Dümmer also offers numerous recreational opportunities for sailors and surfers.
