Freistatt brings together moorland and local history: the protected area encompasses different types of moorland habitat, while the Planet Trail, light railway and memorial site explore various aspects of the town. If you would like to combine nature and history on one trip, Freistatt offers several clearly defined starting points for doing so.

Moorland and Birdlife

The protected area comprises four sections: Nördliches Wietingsmoor, Freistätter Moor, Mittleres Wietingsmoor and Sprekelsmeer. The rewetted areas feature open water, cotton-grass meadows rich in sphagnum moss and moorland heath. At the same time, extensive agricultural use as grassland shapes large parts of Freistätter Moor. These different features give the landscape several facets, from rewetted moorland to grassland used for agriculture.

The protected area is an important breeding and stopover site for birds. Cranes use the grassland to forage and as resting places; some bodies of water serve as roosting sites during their resting periods. Grassland and water areas therefore serve different purposes for the birds.

Planet Trail and Freistatt Light Railway

The 3.3-kilometre Planet Trail runs alongside the light railway line between Freistatt and Heimstatt, with information boards along the way. The Freistatt Light Railway takes groups of visitors into the moor. Its current route follows the same track as the historic line over the old moor dam between the two towns.

The trail and railway have different focuses: the Planet Trail is described by its length and information boards, while the light railway takes groups of visitors into the moor and follows a historic route. If you would like to include the light railway in your travel plans, check the latest departure dates in advance.

Freistatt’s History of Youth Welfare

The history of youth welfare in Freistatt began in 1899. By 1911, four houses in the town provided places for around 250 boys aged 14 to 21. Haus Moorhort is home to a public memorial to this history. Its displays include exhibition panels, historical documents, photographs and artefacts. This site thus connects a specific historical date with various forms of remembrance. In the district of Diepholz, the Syke District Museum presents a broader historical timeframe: it showcases everyday life from the Stone Age to the threshold of the present, complementing the local perspective.

Sensory Garden and Moor Church

The Sensory Garden is a diverse, park-like space that engages hearing, sight, smell and touch. This gives it a different focus from the moorland and local history: here, the emphasis is on experiencing the world through four senses. The “Alten Backhaus” is also part of the visitor area in Freistatt.

Regular church services are held in the Moor Church, and its community rooms are also used for events. If you plan to include the light railway, a church service or an event in your trip, check the latest departure and event dates in advance.
