Oberndorf stretches along both sides of the Oste. The dike makes it easy to appreciate the town’s distinctive layout: the river lies on one side, while the houses protected by the dike lie on the other. Some of these houses have thatched roofs and half-timbered façades. A walk therefore combines views of the Oste with the townscape, without turning them into a single attraction.

The Oste, the Dike and Activities on the Water

The “Mocambo” offers numerous scheduled trips on the Oste through Osteschifffahrt; boat charters for up to 75 people are also available. If you are planning a trip, check the schedule and charter availability in advance. Oberndorf also has more than 250 metres of mooring facilities on both banks that are unaffected by the tide, including a landing stage for passenger ships and one for pleasure boats. They provide good conditions for water sports. Fishing is also an option on the Oste in Oberndorf. This means there are several ways to experience the river: a boat trip, water sports at the moorings or fishing.

The ferry promenade combines the river setting with local memorials. It features a replica of the old Prahm ferry, as well as memorials to the ferryman, Hoffmann von Fallersleben and the sturgeon. The subjects range from the former ferry connection to a well-known person and the fish life of the Oste, giving the waterfront area its own cultural focus.

Museum, Church and Local History

The “Museum Spurensuche – Lebensgeschichten am Fluß” (Museum of Tracing Clues – Life Stories by the River) is housed in a former colonial goods store in Oberndorf. It is a modern, interactive museum for visitors of all ages. Many exhibits can be tried out or explored through play. Those who enjoy actively engaging with exhibits will find a different way to connect with history here than by viewing the memorials on the ferry promenade.

St. George’s Church also has art-historical details: its furnishings include an 1879 Röver organ, a carved altar and a suspended angel. The “derer zu Bobergen” tombstone is also set into the outer wall. The local history room displays artefacts from the past that bear witness to Oberndorf’s former importance. The town’s historical themes thus range from individual works of art and a tombstone to exhibits that explore life in the town in earlier times.

Getting Here and Accommodation

Oberndorf can be reached by train via Wingst station. Cyclists can reach the town on the cycle path from Wingst. These are two different reference points for planning your journey; check the current timetable if travelling by train. A swing bridge connects the municipality of Oberndorf with the district of Bentwisch. If you plan to include the bridge in your itinerary, check its current opening arrangements.

Motorhome travellers can stay at a pitch in Oberndorf, just a few hundred metres from the Oste. Facilities include electricity, a toilet, a shower, a barbecue area and play equipment. As facilities and fees may change, check the latest information before you arrive. Near the pitch, you will find places to eat, a grocery store, a passenger-ship landing stage and a museum. This gives motorhome travellers several useful points of reference for planning their time locally.
