A trip to Hemmoor might begin with birdwatching, a look at the former cement industry or a cultural attraction. The landscape, water and history offer different focal points: the Oste River, the Ostedeich and the open meadows and fields shape the character of the town. When planning your trip, it is therefore helpful to first decide whether you want to focus on wildlife watching, diving or exhibitions.

Moor Meadows, the Oste River and Kreidesee Lake

The observation tower in the Hemmoor Moor Meadows is six metres high and overlooks a breeding area for birds covering around 30 hectares. From the observation station, you can watch meadow pipits, lapwings, geese, migratory birds and storks in their natural habitat. This makes birdwatching a specific focus for anyone interested in local wildlife.

Kreidesee Lake in Hemmoor is also a destination for water-based activities, but with a different focus: the 33-hectare lake has a diving centre. The choice between birdwatching in the moor meadows and diving at Kreidesee Lake therefore depends on what you want to focus on during your stay.

Cement History and Culture

Kulturdiele Hemmoor is a traditional Lower Saxon half-timbered house with a 150-square-metre hall and an exhibition room. It hosts changing exhibitions on art and history related to Hemmoor. The changing exhibitions offer a different way to explore local topics than an outdoor route.

The Cement Experience Trail is a themed route for pedestrians and cyclists on the site of the former cement works. Information boards and exhibits explain the former cement industry and local animal and plant life. Along the way, you can discover both the area's former industrial focus and its local nature.

Another glimpse into the past reaches much further back than recent industrial history: the Hemmoor Globes were formed during the Hemmoorium geological stage, 17 to 21 million years ago. The Osten-Hemmoor Transporter Bridge is also notable for its history and height: it has crossed the Oste River since 1909 and is 38 metres high.

Routes and Activities

The Hemmoor fitness trail with circular walking route has ten exercise stations, some of which are partially accessible. The route is designed for cycling. The facility is free of charge and open to the public; check that it is still free and accessible before your visit.

As a wider route option, the historic OsteDeichroute runs from Belum to Hechthausen and has more than 65 information stops. Its length and many stops make it a distinct regional attraction alongside the individual offerings in Hemmoor. The two route descriptions have different focuses: the fitness trail highlights the exercise stations and cycling, while the OsteDeichroute focuses on the route and its information stops.

Cuxhaven in the Regional Context

The wider destination of Cuxhaven offers a different perspective on the Wadden Sea. The UNESCO Wadden Sea Visitor Centre Cuxhaven presents information about the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and the Cuxhaven coastal heaths in an exhibition spread over three floors. The visitor centre's nature tours offer the chance to experience mudflats, salt marshes, geest cliffs and coastal heathland.
