Nienhagen brings together a range of different themes: the local history museum and St. Lawrence’s Church offer cultural points of interest, while the oil station represents industrial heritage. Disc golf and the biotope at Michelwiese add opportunities for exercise and nature experiences. You can tailor your stay to focus on local history, a game outdoors with others, or the region’s landscapes.

Culture and Local History

The Nienhagen Local History Museum is open on Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. Guided tours are available by arrangement, and admission is free. If you are planning a visit, check the opening hours again before you travel. This lets you fit the museum visit into your stay deliberately, rather than assuming it is available at any time.

St. Lawrence’s Church stands in the center of Nienhagen. One of its distinctive features is its freestanding church tower, characteristic of the heathland region. The oil station marks another trace of history: it represents industrial heritage and the story of Germany’s largest oil field. The historic Kali-Bahn railway line also connects Nienhagen to the region; it links Hänigsen, Wathlingen, Nienhagen and Ehlershausen.

The traditional Hachefest, held every year by the municipality of Nienhagen, is part of local cultural life. Hache dances are also performed at the festival. The Laurentiustheater, founded by Deacon Sven Gutzeit, also offers regular cultural highlights in the municipality’s annual calendar. The Hachefest and the theater therefore represent different facets of local culture: an annual tradition and a regular theater program in the municipality’s calendar.

Disc Golf and Nature in Nienhagen

The disc golf park is located on an extensive recreation site and has nine baskets. It invites people of all ages to get active in nature and play together. The park can be used at any time until 10 p.m.; playing after 10 p.m. is not permitted, in order to protect the environment. Check local conditions before your visit.

The Michelwiese offers a different kind of nature experience. The biotope there has been recognized and awarded by NABU as a conservation area for rare bumblebee species. In recent years, an increasing number of plant species threatened in their natural habitats have also established themselves at Michelwiese. The focus here is on protecting species and plants, which makes Michelwiese thematically distinct from the disc golf park’s recreation area.

Cycling and Longer Tours

The “Half-Timbered Houses, Brick Gothic and Bauhaus” cycling tour can be shortened via Nienhagen and Wathlingen; the shortcut is signposted. The historic Kali-Bahn railway line is separate: it links Hänigsen, Wathlingen, Nienhagen and Ehlershausen and should not be confused with the signposted shortcut.

Celle as a Wider Travel Destination

The SĂĽdheide Nature Park offers a broader setting for tours in the wider Celle destination. It has ten signposted themed cycling routes covering a total of more than 400 kilometers. They lead to notable sights and pass through heathland, forests, heathland streams, and moorland and pond landscapes. The same nature park has 23 themed hiking trails, five nature trails and three long-distance hiking trails. These figures describe different types of tours; they do not represent a single continuous route.

A city walk is also described in the wider Celle destination: the circular route through Celle’s Old Town is 3.22 kilometers long and is a very easy walk from Celle Ducal Palace to the synagogue in Celle. Nature tours and water sports involve different planning requirements. Canoeing on the heathland streams in the district of Celle is permitted with restrictions each year from May 16 to October 14. Check local restrictions and water levels before setting out.
