Ahnsbeck lies on the southern edge of the Lüneburg Heath. Local history, the historic bakehouse and trails through fields, woods and along rivers give a stay different focal points: you can combine a visit to the village with a hike or bike ride, or plan excursions in the Celle destination area.

Local history and the bakehouse

Ahnsbeck first appears under the name Alrebekesa in a deed of sale from 1197. The name is translated as “alder-stream floodplain” and interpreted as a reference to its original location in a floodplain beside a stream lined with alders. The name thus brings together local history and an account of the landscape passed down through tradition. The chapel bell also has a recorded date: the Diocese of Verden donated it in 1439.

The historic bakehouse is used on three baking days each year and also on Open Monument Day. Specific dates and the annual programme may vary, so check the event dates before your trip.

Hiking and cycling around Ahnsbeck

Hikes around Ahnsbeck can follow rivers, pass through woods and cross fields. Cycling routes may include field tracks, forest tracks and paved farm roads. You can choose bike rides by difficulty and duration. This helps narrow down a ride to suit your preferred time frame and level of challenge; for hiking, rivers, woods and fields each offer a different landscape. Check the conditions on individual routes before setting out.

The ensemble in the village centre around the old chapel also includes a rustic farm shop offering asparagus. Before visiting, check whether the farm shop is still open and what it currently offers.

Excursions in the Celle destination area

From Ahnsbeck, you can plan day trips to Wienhausen Monastery and the historic town of Celle. Celle city centre is home to almost 500 half-timbered houses. The 3.22-kilometre Old Town walk runs from Celle Palace to the synagogue in Celle and is a very easy stroll.

Another excursion takes you to Wienhausen Monastery. The former Cistercian monastery is considered an example of North German Brick Gothic and half-timbered architecture. Its medieval art treasures include tapestries from the 14th and 15th centuries, a painted nuns’ choir, valuable chests and cupboards, and a collection of some of the oldest spectacles in the world. The monastery welcomes visitors from April to October. Every year, the Gothic tapestries are explained by experts over the course of one week, traditionally starting on the Saturday after Pentecost; check the exact dates before your trip.

The Südheide Nature Park in the Celle destination area has ten signposted themed cycling routes, covering more than 400 kilometres in total. The hiking options there also include 23 themed trails, five nature trails and three long-distance hiking trails. For cycling, the Celle Region Navigator provides information on trail surfaces, rest stops and services. Check digital route information before setting off.
