Eldingen lies on the southern edge of the Lüneburg Heath. Visitors interested in historic buildings will find several construction and furnishing phases in the church. Bargfeld adds a cultural focus with a visit that must be arranged in advance. The cycling routes along the Lutter offer a choice between two circular tours for trip planning.

Romanesque Church and Historic Furnishings

The church in Eldingen is a Romanesque fieldstone hall church dating from the 12th century. Its polygonal choir was added in the 14th century. The furnishings include a Gothic carved altar from around 1425 and a Romanesque sandstone baptismal font, probably dating from the 13th century. A freestanding half-timbered bell tower with a pyramidal roof adds a distinctive architectural feature. The hall church and baptismal font represent Romanesque forms, while the altar exemplifies Gothic woodcarving; the choir makes a later building phase visible. Several specific features thus offer a chance to observe different periods of construction and styles.

Postmoor: Views and Landscape Development

Postmoor is a distinct natural attraction: an observation tower on the edge of the moor offers expansive views across the moorland. The W21 hiking route, “Cows in Half-Mourning,” includes a detour to the tower. As route information may change, check the current signposting before setting out.

The process of rewetting Postmoor has been underway since 1984, gradually creating a new moorland habitat. Cranes and other rare bird species are associated with Postmoor. Sightings depend on the season and are not guaranteed. Views of the landscape, its long-term development and its birdlife are distinct aspects of this natural attraction.

Cycling Routes along the Lutter

The Lutter cycling trail offers northern and southern circular routes along the Lutter, on the eastern edge of Südheide Nature Park. Both sections start at the Bargfeld hiking car park next to a pond, where there is a rest area and shelter. The shared starting point and two directions provide a clear choice between the circular routes.

Bargfeld: Literature and Getting There

Bargfeld is part of the municipality of Eldingen. Arno Schmidt’s house and changing exhibitions about his life and work can be visited by appointment. As exhibition content may change, check what will be on view during your visit when arranging an appointment.

A practical tip for travelling by bus: CeBus route 460 from Lachendorf or Eldingen stops in Bargfeld. Check the current timetable before travelling. This bus information is separate from the starting-point information for the Lutter cycling routes: the Bargfeld hiking car park is listed as the starting point for both sections.

In the Wider Celle Destination

In the wider Celle destination, Südheide Nature Park offers ten signposted themed cycling routes with a total length of more than 400 kilometres. They lead to notable sights and through heathland, forests, heathland streams, and moor and pond landscapes. The hiking network there includes 23 themed trails, five nature trails and three long-distance hiking trails. This selection provides a broader context for cycling and hiking alongside the two circular routes along the Lutter.

Canoeing on the heathland streams in the Celle district is also a seasonal activity: it is permitted with restrictions each year from 16 May to 14 October. Check local restrictions and water levels before setting off. Culture enthusiasts will also find the former Cistercian monastery of Wienhausen in the wider Celle destination. It is considered an example of North German Brick Gothic and half-timbered architecture. Its medieval art treasures include tapestries from the 14th and 15th centuries and a painted nuns’ choir. Experts explain the Gothic tapestries for one week each year, traditionally starting on the Saturday after Pentecost. Check the dates before travelling.
