Sontra’s historic half-timbered town hall, mining history and varied routes offer several starting points for planning a trip. You can focus on local history, hiking, cycling or wheeled sports; these topics differ considerably and can be explored individually.

Old Town and Historic Traces

Sontra’s historic old town, with its impressive half-timbered town hall, is one of the city’s special attractions. Brodberg offers another glimpse into the past: copper was mined there more than 500 years ago, followed later by cobalt and barite. The succession of minerals gives Sontra’s mining history a tangible local connection.

Another historical focus is the former site of the Hussar barracks. The 3.7-kilometre Bundeswehr educational trail runs across the former barracks grounds and offers insights into the region’s military history. Those choosing routes by theme can distinguish between mining history at Brodberg and military history along the educational trail.

Routes and Activities

The Sontra pump track includes a kids’ course with asphalt waves and turns about 20 centimetres high. It is intended as a fun introduction to wheeled sports for toddlers and balance-bike riders. The MTB skills course in Sontra has a different focus: it is 380 metres long, covers about 1,000 square metres and has an elevation difference of approximately 1.5 metres. Its features include two wooden bridges, a rock garden, a sand section with varying difficulty levels and a log ride, or tree-trunk descent. The courses therefore differ both in their intended use and in the features described.

Hiking routes of varying lengths and themes are available. The premium P26 “Holstein” trail is an 8-kilometre circular route through the Holstein recreation area. The Bundeswehr educational trail is shorter at 3.7 kilometres and focuses on the former barracks grounds and military history. The long-distance “Path of German Unity” and the Barbarossa Trail (X8) also pass through Sontra. Before setting out on a specific hike, it is advisable to check the latest route details and conditions.

Cyclists will also find a named route connected to Sontra: the 36-kilometre Glück-Auf cycle route links Cornberg, Nentershausen, Solz and Sontra. All four towns were shaped by copper shale mining. This gives travellers a cycling route alongside the hiking trails, linking several towns and their shared mining history.
