When planning a trip to Berkatal, you can choose from a range of interests: the karst landscape of the Hie- and Kripplöcher, nature trails and hiking routes, or the local history museum. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you might first consider whether nature, outdoor activities or regional history should shape your stay. Local attractions offer different experiences in these areas, allowing you to plan around your own interests.

Karst Landscape and Trails in Frankershausen

The Hie- and Kripplöcher karst area has been shaped by larger and smaller sinkholes, which can be shallow or deep. A nature trail runs through the Hielöcher. The Kripplöcher have their own access restriction: they may not be entered without a guide. Check locally in advance to find out whether a guided hike is available.

Another option for hiking is the Premium Trail P2 Frankershäuser Karst. It leads from Frankershausen through the Hielöcher nature reserve to Ellerstein and Großer Marstein. These destinations give the route a different focus from the nature trail through the Hielöcher. Before setting out, check the operator’s notices for temporary closures.

Mill Nature Trail and Water Play

Opened in summer 2025, the Mill Nature Trail is right next to the sports field, which is the starting point for the Premium Trail P2 Frankershäuser Karst. It brings together a playground, a meeting area and a nature trail. Its features include the water-play island, where visitors can experience how water brings life and movement. This offers a distinct focus, different from the karst formations of the Hie- and Kripplöcher.

This distinction can help with planning: P2 leads to named landscape destinations, while the Mill Nature Trail brings together play, meeting and learning areas in one place. These offer different ways to spend time outdoors; you can choose according to the theme that interests you.

Berkatal Local History Museum: Mining, Crafts and Everyday Life

The Berkatal Local History Museum is on the upper floor of the municipal administration building at BerkastraĂźe 54. Visits are possible by telephone appointment, so arrange your visit in advance. The museum focuses on life, living and work in the region in earlier times. Regional mining history is a particular focus.

Exhibits include rocks and minerals with information about their uses, old miners’ lamps and equipment, and prehistoric objects from the Meißnervorland. Various tools also illustrate agriculture and woodworking crafts; flax and wool processing are documented as well. Together, these subjects offer a different perspective from the trails through the landscape: the focus here is on mining, materials and past working life.

A Different Perspective by Bike

The Anger cycling tour connects the village greens in the localities of the municipality of Meißner with the village green in Frankershausen, the seat of the municipality of Berkatal. Its named points of interest differ from the landscape destinations on P2: the cycling tour focuses on the village greens, while the premium trail takes in the Hielöcher nature reserve, Ellerstein and Großer Marstein. This lets you choose between the two routes according to their respective themes, without treating them as the same kind of outing.

The Wider Setting: Werra-MeiĂźner District

At the broader destination level, the Werra-Meißner district is part of the Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land tourist region. At this regional level, visitors will find a dense network of certified premium trails as well as the Werra-Burgen-Steig Hessen; these routes take hikers to particularly scenic areas in the Geo-Naturpark. This wider perspective on the Werra-Meißner district complements Berkatal’s specific attractions with a broader hiking context, while the Hielöcher, P2 and Anger cycling tour remain the local highlights described here.
