The Werratal Cycle Path passes right by the Werra Border Park, bringing cycling and border history together in Herleshausen. Augustenau Castle, the Castle Church, and a collection of objects relating to medicine, pharmacy, and folklore add architectural and family history to the mix. Signposted hiking trails and canoeing on the Werra offer further ways to spend time outdoors. When planning your stay, you can decide whether you want to focus mainly on culture and history or include outdoor activities.

Border History in Herleshausen

The Werra Border Park was inaugurated in summer 2022 on the site of the former East-West German border crossing at Herleshausen. Information boards, image and text panels, and audiovisual stations present the history of the former border town. The park is free to enter. If you are planning a visit, check the current access arrangements before setting out. The “Border Station for Contemporary History” museum opened at Herleshausen railway station on the weekend of October 10 and 11, 2015. Another local tradition is the Kirmes, a fair organized by the village’s young people in Herleshausen for generations.

Castle, Castle Church, and Collection

Augustenau Castle in Herleshausen was built in 1539 as a residence for Georg von Reckrodt. The Protestant Castle Church stands right next to it. It was built around 1300 as a fortified church and preserves 14th-century frescoes, as well as inscribed and heraldic tombstones from the 16th and 17th centuries. These include the 1558 epitaph of the knight Georg von Reckrodt. Since Easter 2018, the Castle Church has been a cycling church.

The INSEL · DOKTOR · HAUS offers a different perspective on the town’s history. It displays a wide range of objects and rarities relating to medicine, pharmacy, and folklore, collected over three generations by the Dr. Marsch family from Herleshausen. The collection thus brings together several subject areas, while the castle and church focus instead on architectural history and historic features.

Hiking, Cycling, and Canoeing

Herleshausen has 35 kilometers of signposted hiking trails. The town is also located on the Green Belt of Hesse National Natural Monument. The three activities offer different ways to spend your time: explore signposted trails on foot, use the Werratal Cycle Path, or plan canoeing on the Werra as a leisure activity. Providers and water conditions may vary; check them if you are planning a canoe trip.

Herleshausen is accessible by Deutsche Bahn for the Werratal Cycle Path section from Herleshausen to Treffurt. Bahnhofstraße is listed as the starting point in Herleshausen. Before you travel, check current train times if you are coordinating your trip with this connection. This lets you treat the cycling trip and a visit to the town as separate parts of your plans, without having to follow a set itinerary.

The Wider Region: Werra-Meißner District

You can consider the Werra-Meißner district as a regional destination in its own right: from a tourism perspective, the district is part of the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park. Mount Hoher Meißner is the highest mountain in the region and is regarded as the home of Frau Holle. Geological diversity, varied landscapes, and rich flora and fauna shape the natural environment between the Werra Valley, Hoher Meißner, and Kaufungen Forest.

Seasonal landscapes are also part of this regional context. These include the cherry blossom in the Witzenhausen Cherry Country and the orchid bloom, pink poppy fields in Germerode and Grandenborn, as well as autumn foliage and winter sports on Hoher Meißner. The timing of seasonal events varies from year to year. For hikers, the Werra-Meißner district also has a dense network of certified premium trails and the Werra-Burgen-Steig Hessen, which leads to especially scenic areas in the Geo-Nature Park.
