Rödermark offers a variety of themed routes: the Rodau Nature Trail focuses on the river and nature, the “Oane Wesch” Culture and History Trail explores local history, and the wumboR cycling loop passes landmarks and works of art. You can tailor your stay to whether you would like to discover information boards by the water, QR code stations or art along a cycling route.
River and nature on the Rodau Nature Trail
The Rodau Nature Trail brings the Rodau to life in the townscape of Urberach and Ober-Roden. The route is just under six kilometres long and features 29 information boards. It starts at the spring that flows year-round by the Rodauquelle playground in Urberach and ends near the wastewater treatment plant in Ober-Roden. Twelve boards cover nature in, on and around the Rodau, including conservation successes, fish, small animals, birds and plants. The clearly defined start, route and endpoint provide practical orientation; the subject matter focuses on nature around the river.
Cultural history and art along the way
Another option is the “Oane Wesch” Culture and History Trail, with 56 stations. QR code boards let you access and listen to the texts on your mobile phone. The two trails thus differ both in subject matter and in how they present it: river nature and information boards on one hand, cultural and historical stations with mobile audio texts on the other. You can choose whichever focus interests you most.
Individual landmarks help you find your way along the wumboR cycling loop. Near Waldacker, the route crosses the 50th parallel; columns display photos of cities along this line of latitude. In the Bulau, it passes the “Celtic Funeral Procession” steel sculpture by Kai Wujanz. A reconstructed section of Roman road is also located in the Bulau. The cycling loop also runs past the “Braaret Bernsche” and two features on the Regionalpark route. Public art can also be found elsewhere: 22 sculptures stand in Rödermark’s districts, in busy squares or at intersections.
In the wider Offenbach destination
In the wider Offenbach destination, the story of the Rodau Nature Trail traces the river’s transformation: from four former mills on its banks and its earlier courses to its straightening in the 1930s and the renaturalisation that began in 2009. The Regionalpark Circular Route offers another regional perspective. Stretching 190 kilometres in total, it connects orchards and wetland habitats with works of art, historical landmarks, viewpoints and play areas. Sections can be explored on foot or by bicycle.
The Main Cycle Route also offers a distinctive perspective on the region: it follows the Main from its sources to its mouth through the landscapes of Franconia and Hesse. Mainhausen, Seligenstadt, Hainburg and Mühlheim on the Hessian Lower Main lie along the route. The Main Cycle Route offers varied scenery away from heavy traffic and is signposted to a high standard. Seligenstadt adds to the cultural experience: the Einhard Basilica is considered one of the most important churches from the Carolingian period on German soil and is the town’s present-day landmark. The RegioMuseum displays prehistoric and early history, folklore, arts and crafts, paintings and sculpture from the 15th to the 18th centuries, as well as the history of the town and abbey of Seligenstadt.
