Flörsheim am Main combines an outstanding old town with places of remembrance, culture and trails along the Main and through vineyards. If you are looking for accommodation here, you can first consider whether historic sites, events, wine or circular hikes will shape your stay. The various routes and seasonal offerings provide specific guidance.

Old Town, Architectural History and Remembrance

The restored old town has been designated a cultural asset worthy of protection under an international convention. The Main Tower is considered the city’s oldest surviving structure and dates from the mid-16th century. Even before the Thirty Years’ War, it served as an early modern fortification: it protected the banks of the Main and helped control shipping. Today, the Kunstforum Mainturm provides space for cultural events and encounters between artists and art enthusiasts across four floors.

A digital city tour uses a smartphone to guide visitors to 15 selected sites in Flörsheim’s old town. Google Maps can help with navigation from one stop to the next; check the current app or map link in advance. In Synagogengasse, a memorial stone on the surviving outer wall commemorates the synagogue of the Jewish community of Flörsheim am Main, which stood there from 1718 to 1938. Surviving parts of the former synagogue can be seen through a window in the wall and are freely accessible.

At the Flörsheim Local History Museum, the Schütz Gallery mainly displays 18th-century paintings by the Flörsheim family of painters, the Schütz family. The Faience Cabinet is devoted to Flörsheim faience from the 18th and early 19th centuries. Check the current visitor arrangements before your visit. St. Gallus Parish Church is also part of the city’s cultural landscape: it is the city’s landmark and the venue of the first Gallus Concert, held on November 9, 1980. The concert series aimed to make Flörsheim’s Baroque church, with its suitable architecture and acoustics, a venue for musical events; check the current program before visiting.

Festivals, Stage and Wine

The Day of the Betrothed is celebrated every year on the last Monday in August with a ceremonial procession through the lanes of the old town. Flörsheim Carnival includes both indoor and street celebrations and attracts thousands of visitors from across the region every year. In Bad Weilbach, the Fountain Festival is held every year in the spa park over the Pentecost weekend. If you would like to experience one of these festivals, check the current dates and program in advance.

Wine is also among the local offerings. During the warmer months, Flörsheim and Wicker wines can be sampled at weekends and on public holidays at the Flörsheim wine-tasting stand on the Main embankment. The stand also makes a good place to take a break. As this is a seasonal offering, check the current opening dates before you travel. The Flörsheimer Keller is a venue for cabaret and comedy; here, too, it is worth checking the current program.

Choose Hiking Trails by Length and Theme

Several trails offer different lengths and points of interest. The approximately four-kilometer Wicker circular hiking trail starts and ends at St. Katahrina Church. It passes Nonnberg vineyard and runs through Wicker’s vineyards, reaching the “Tor zum Rheingau” wine-tasting stand. The five-kilometer Weilbach circular hiking trail passes, among other places, the Poet’s House and the Schnecken-Hügel lookout bastion. The Poet’s House is a shelter surrounded by ginkgo trees, a place to rest and relax and to explore literature and poetry.

The nearly 15-kilometer Flörsheim circular hiking trail runs from the banks of the Main across the Main floodplain, past the Opel Bridge, lime kilns and Iron Tower, to the Flörsheimer Warte and on to the sulfur spring in Bad Weilbach. Another option is the Main Hiking Trail: from the Eddersheim lock, it follows the embankment to Flörsheim, passes the Main Tower, Berlin Fountain and “Flörsheimer Fahr,” then heads toward Keramag/Falkenberg and the lime kilns. The routes differ considerably in length and the places they pass; walking times cannot be determined from this information.

The Wicker Wine Trail also starts in Wicker at the “Tor zum Rheingau” on Taunusstraße. The circular route passes the König-Wilhelmsberg and Nonnberg vineyards and the Flörsheimer Warte, then returns to its starting point. The Upper Rheingau Wine Experience Trail also has a starting point in Wicker. Its main route is approximately 18 kilometers long and provides information at 40 stops about geology, climate, history, wine and the region’s winegrowers.

Green Spaces and More to Discover

Flörsheimer Schweiz is a recreational area featuring natural beauty and public artworks. These include the “Iron Tree,” an artwork in Flörsheimer Schweiz. At the eastern end of the old town is the Stadtgarten. In Bad Weilbach, the spa park and its springs provide a place for recreation; along its northern edge, beside the Regional Park route, is a fallow deer enclosure maintained by the city. Since 2012, the Regional Park Tower in Weilbach has offered panoramic views. A spacious public adventure playground with a barbecue shelter is also located on the banks of the Wickerbach in Keramag/Falkenberg.

The Main Riverside Cycle Route also brings many day-trippers to Flörsheim. For seasonal offerings and events, it is advisable to check the current dates.
