Ronneburg Castle dates back to the 13th century and is one of the few hilltop castles preserved in its original condition. It gives your stay a clear historical focus. An annual program of events, eleven circular hiking trails and a paragliding school provide further local points of interest. When planning, the first question is whether an event, an interest in the castle or a hike should shape your stay.

Castle and Events

The “Friends of Ronneburg” support association offers a varied annual program of historic markets and festivals. The Medieval Castle Festival in particular attracts many visitors from near and far to the castle. These events, held on specific dates, complement the building’s historical appeal. If you would like to plan your trip around a market or festival, check the specific event date in advance. This lets you plan your stay around the occasion you want to attend, rather than linking a random travel day to a particular festival.

Circular Hiking Trails in and around Ronneburg

Eleven circular hiking trails run mostly within the Ronneburg district and also pass through the districts of the neighboring communities of Neuberg, BĂĽdingen and GrĂĽndau. So the trails do not run exclusively through Ronneburg. The route concept dates from 2010; most of the descriptions are still up to date. Since the trails are not marked with waymarkers, it is best to have the description for your chosen route with you when planning your hike.

Hiking and events call for different planning priorities: for a hike, the route description is important; for a festival, the date matters. This distinction helps you plan your stay to suit your plans, without limiting the circular trails to a single area.

Another Local Point of Interest

The Hot Spot paragliding school is located right next to Ronneburg Castle, in the Ronneburg Hills. So, alongside the castle’s history, markets and festivals, hiking and paragliding offer different things to explore. When choosing a destination, you can consider whether your interests lie more in culture, outdoor activities or both.

The Wider Region: Main-Kinzig District

Elsewhere in the wider Main-Kinzig District travel region, other places offer their own landscape and cultural attractions. The Kinzig rises in the northeast of the district near Sinntal-Sterbfritz and flows into the Main at Hanau. Another landscape worth exploring is the orchard meadow area stretching from Bergen-Enkheim to Maintal-Hochstadt. It covers around 320 hectares; some of its sunny slopes are protected. In spring, blossoming trees and colorful meadows invite you to enjoy walks and day trips.

For a distinct cultural experience, visit the Gelnhausen Museum in the former Augustaschule at Obermarkt. It is designed as an interactive family museum. Children and adults can experience history through touching, listening, smelling, taking part and trying things out, with guided tours, workshops, rallies and other educational activities. Program details may change, so check them before planning a specific visit.
