A public artwork in the shape of an apple, a small park on the Main and paths through the Green Centre reveal different sides of Maintal. During your stay, you can focus on the countryside and cycling or walking paths, places along the banks of the Main, or art in public spaces. The places below offer concrete points of reference.

Green Centre: paths and landscapes

The Green Centre is a local recreation and leisure area of around two square kilometres between Bischofsheim, Dörnigheim and Hochstadt. Its paths connect the districts and are suitable for both pedestrians and cyclists. Its natural features include orchards, a wind-blown sand dune, wet grassland, lakes and streams.

The Green Centre is also a refuge for birds and other animals, and rare plants grow there. Maintal’s orchards are also habitats with particular biodiversity and scenic appeal. The extensive belt of orchards around Maintal is part of the largest contiguous orchard area in Hesse. If you want to make nature and outdoor activity the focus of your stay, you will find paths and a variety of landscapes here to enjoy together.

Banks of the Main: park, memorial trees and boat trips

On the banks of the Main in Dörnigheim, Fischerpunkt and Frauenhain offer different reasons to linger. Fischerpunkt is a small park west of the former ferry landing. As a place to relax and meet, it invites you to spend time by the river, observe and explore. The Main mermaid is the landmark of Fischerpunkt.

The upgraded Primus-Linie landing stage is right by the water. This makes it easy to combine a visit to the riverbank with a boat trip. If you are planning a trip, check the timetable for your chosen date.

At Frauenhain, individual trees bear posts inscribed with the names of women being honoured. An information board by the pedestrian and cycle path provides information about the trees and the women they commemorate. The variety of trees and the seating invite you to linger and explore. The stretch of riverbank between Frauenhain in the west and Pappelwäldchen in the east also includes natural meadows, children’s playgrounds, recreational facilities, extensive sunbathing lawns and quiet areas. Further improvements are planned.

Public art and apple culture

“The Apple Reigns” is a public artwork at the Pfarrhof, at the corner of Hauptstraße 9, in Maintal-Hochstadt. The sculpture, created by Robert Kaller and Katrin Bindig-Trübel, was commissioned in early 2024. Since 27 September 2024, it has visibly marked the centre of Maintal and connected the districts.

The apple in the artwork symbolises Maintal’s orchards and apple wine culture. The sculpture thus links a specific place in Hochstadt with two themes that help shape the town’s character. Together with the places along the banks of the Main and the Green Centre, they offer a range of options, without requiring a single set sightseeing itinerary.

Orchards in the Main-Kinzig district

In the wider travel destination of the Main-Kinzig district, the orchard area from Bergen-Enkheim to Maintal-Hochstadt covers around 320 hectares. Some of the sunny slopes are protected nature reserves. In spring, flowering trees and colourful meadows invite visitors to enjoy walks and excursions. This regional perspective adds a broader scale and a seasonal dimension to the picture of Maintal’s orchards.

If you are looking for a hotel in Maintal, you can start by deciding which experiences matter most during your stay: paths and habitats in the Green Centre, public spaces along the banks of the Main in Dörnigheim, or the artwork in Hochstadt. If you are planning a boat trip, check the Primus-Linie timetable.
