In the Lahn-Dill District, discoveries range from optical phenomena in Wetzlar and the Herbstlabyrinth show cave in Breitscheid to the Bell World at Greifenstein Castle, which displays almost 100 bells. Mining and manufacturing
The Fortuna Mine in Solms-Oberbiel is the only site in Hesse on the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The Fortuna Field and Mine Railway Museum is also in Solms-Oberbiel. Its collection includes 50 historic field and mine railway locomotives and 100 carriages; trains run according to a timetable. The two attractions offer different experiences: one is a visitor mine, while the other focuses on historic railways and carriages. Villa GrĂĽn in Dillenburg presents another side of industrial history. In more than 20 rooms, it displays objects and true-to-life scenes of industrial and craft production in the Dill region. The basement houses an elaborate, multimedia-rich exhibition devoted to mining. Villa GrĂĽn therefore combines insights into manufacturing and crafts with a dedicated exhibition on mining.
Optics and Goethe in Wetzlar
The Optics Trail in Wetzlar invites visitors to experiment and discover optical phenomena; one of its stops is a walk-through kaleidoscope. The Lotte House offers a different focus: it commemorates Goethe’s meeting with Charlotte Buff and the summer of 1772. Two rooms on the first floor house a permanent exhibition on the origins and reception of Goethe’s first novel, “The Sorrows of Young Werther.” In Wetzlar, you can therefore explore optics and literary history as distinct themes for your trip.
Caves, bells and landscape
The Herbstlabyrinth-Adventhöhle cave system in Breitscheid is the largest cave system in Hesse and is among the most significant in Germany. On weekdays or during school holidays, RMV bus route 510 to the Breitscheid, Rathaus stop is one option for reaching the Herbstlabyrinth show cave. From there, the walk to the cave takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Check the timetable before travelling, and allow the stated time for the walk.
At Greifenstein Castle, the Bell World traces a thousand years of German bell history through almost 100 bells. The castle’s twin towers offer spectacular views. The combination of an exhibition and a view distinguishes this visit from the exhibitions in Wetzlar and Dillenburg: here, the focus is on bell history and the view from the towers.
The hiking trails also reveal different aspects of the landscape. The regionally renowned Lahn-Dill-Bergland Trail offers a particularly rewarding way to explore the landscape of the Lahn-Dill District. The Lahn Hiking Trail crosses the Lahn Valley and also explores the district’s landscape. If you want to plan your trip around a particular landscape, the first trail connects you with the Lahn-Dill-Bergland, while the Lahn Valley is explicitly part of the second trail’s route.
