Ehringshausen can be explored from different perspectives: hiking trails lead through several districts, while the Koppe, Huguenot history and the local history museum offer specific points of interest for nature and culture enthusiasts. When choosing a route, the stated distances and approximate walking times for two routes are particularly helpful. This lets you plan a day of hiking around your preferred time frame while also taking in different landscapes and places.
Hiking trails by distance and time
The Köhlerweg in the municipality of Ehringshausen is one of 19 certified premium circular trails. The 12.4 kilometers can be covered in about 3.5 hours with a moderate level of fitness. The trail crosses the slopes of Kölschhausen to the Koppe, the highest point on the route, and passes open stream valleys north of Dreisbach and hillside meadows with views. This lets you match the specific trail distance and approximate time frame with the scenic features along the circular route.
Another hiking route covers about 21 kilometers, with around 180 meters of elevation gain, through the forests of the formerly independent municipalities of Ehringshausen, Dillheim, Daubhausen and Greifenthal. The walking time is about six hours. By comparison, the Köhlerweg takes about 3.5 hours at a moderate level of fitness, while this longer route takes around six hours; the distances also differ, at 12.4 and about 21 kilometers. This gives you two different time frames to consider when planning a day of hiking.
The 23-kilometer Ehringshausen Great Hiking Trail on the left bank of the Dill runs through the municipality’s woodland north of the Dill. It starts at the water reservoir in Katzenfurt, passes through Dreisbach, Niederlemp and Breitenbach, and returns to Katzenfurt via Kölschhausen. The route description thus takes you through several named places and wooded areas in the municipality.
The 11.8-kilometer Ehringshausen Great Hiking Trail on the right bank of the Dill offers a different route. It leads from Daubhausen through Ehringshausen-Ichelhausen and the forests of Ehringshausen and Daubhausen, along the Hohe Straße to Greifenthal-Steckenmesser, then via Greifenthal on the Historic Huguenot Trail back to Daubhausen. The places and sections of trail named clearly distinguish this route from the Great Hiking Trail on the left bank of the Dill, allowing you to compare the routes by their course.
The Koppe: Geology and Landscape
The Koppe is an extinct volcano 351 meters high and the highest elevation in the district of Kölschhausen. It was the first nature reserve in the Wetzlar district. On its north side, a column formation is exposed in an old quarry at a height of about 15 meters. Its geological classification, historic designation as a protected area and rock formation each offer a distinct point of interest. On the Köhlerweg, it is also the highest point on the route.
Huguenot History and the Local History Museum
The Ehringshausen Local History Museum covers the history of the village, old toys, and the life and work of Dr. Hermann Huttel. Alongside the general topic of village history, the exhibition thus names two specific focal points: historic toys and Huttel himself. This complements the hiking and geology topics with a cultural and historical perspective on Ehringshausen.
Greifenthal is also part of this historical theme. In its early years, the Huguenot village did not have its own cemetery, so the dead were carried to the shared cemetery in Daubhausen. The “Historic Huguenot Hiking Trail” begins in the district of Greifenthal. This is distinct from the route of the 11.8-kilometer Great Hiking Trail on the right bank of the Dill, which returns to Daubhausen via Greifenthal along the Historic Huguenot Trail. The Huguenot theme therefore appears both in the history of the village and in the hiking trails described here.
