The May Man tradition at Pentecost, marked hiking trails and winter sports on the Eichholzkopf give Dietzhölztal a variety of attractions. The Trail of the Senses is also one of the local leisure activities. You can tailor your stay to local customs, hiking or a winter activity.
Pentecost as a cultural reference point
In Rittershausen, Mandeln and Steinbrücken, the volunteer fire brigades maintain the May Man tradition at Pentecost. The traditional figure is documented at least as far back as the mid-19th century. Adorned with foliage, the May Man is intended to represent summer’s victory over winter. This symbolism links the tradition to the change of seasons, while Pentecost provides its point in time. The tradition of the Pentecost Bride is also maintained in Dietzhölztal. The Pentecost Brides are three girls in their first year of school. The shared connection to Pentecost links the two traditions; the seasonal meaning of the May Man and the group of Pentecost Brides each provide a different emphasis.
Forest, hiking trails and winter activities
Dietzhölztal is one of the most forested municipalities in Hesse. Its marked hiking trails include special routes in the Lahn-Dill-Bergland region. The Trail of the Senses is another local leisure option. At the Eichholzkopf, winter sports enthusiasts can take the ski lift up and then ski down into the valley. Hiking and the combination of a lift ride and downhill skiing thus offer distinct activity options. Check whether the ski lift is operating on your travel dates before making plans.
More cultural attractions in the Lahn-Dill district
The wider destination of the Lahn-Dill district offers other cultural attractions. In Wetzlar, the Lotte House commemorates Goethe’s meeting with Charlotte Buff and the summer of 1772. Two rooms on the first floor house a permanent exhibition on the origins and impact of Goethe’s first novel, “The Sorrows of Young Werther.” Also in Wetzlar, the Optics Trail invites visitors to experiment with and discover optical phenomena; it includes, among other things, a walk-through kaleidoscope. In Dillenburg, Villa Grün presents objects and detailed recreations of industrial and craft production in the Dill area across more than 20 rooms. The basement also houses an extensive, multimedia mining exhibition. Thus, literary and optical themes in Wetzlar contrast with a combination of manufacturing and mining history in Dillenburg. The Bell World at Greifenstein Castle in the Lahn-Dill district presents almost 100 bells in a tour through a thousand years of German bell history.
The Fortuna mine visitor center in Solms-Oberbiel is also one of the attractions in the Lahn-Dill district. It is the only anchor point in Hesse on the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The Fortuna Field and Mine Railway Museum in Solms-Oberbiel has 50 historic field and mine locomotives and 100 cars; trains run according to a timetable. If you are interested in the train service, plan your visit around the timetable.
