The Rhäden circular trail offers a nature route of approximately eight kilometres in Wildeck; Wildecker Tal and the border history trail provide historical highlights. This means the options range from nature watching to exploring the history of the valley and the border fortifications. The Rhäden nature reserve lies within the municipality of Wildeck and extends to Werra-Suhl-Tal in Thuringia. In the wider Hersfeld-Rotenburg destination, it is also part of the Green Belt Germany biotope network.
Experience nature in Rhäden
The approximately eight-kilometre loop through the nature reserve can be covered on foot or by bicycle. Four observation platforms are part of the route; spotting scopes are available free of charge at the observation stands along the trail. Several public parking areas are located at the edge of the protected area. The route length provides a concrete starting point for planning, while you can choose between walking the loop and cycling it.
Rhäden is an important habitat for threatened and endangered bird species, as well as other animals and plants. Nature watching and the area's importance as a habitat are therefore different aspects of the same visit: the platforms and spotting scopes offer opportunities for observation, while the area's protected status draws attention to its flora and fauna.
Historical traces in Wildecker Tal
Wildecker Tal was once known as the Hessian Sanssouci because of its castle and parkland. Its historical features include the Inselsteich pond and a 22-metre-high sandstone obelisk. The Historic Wildecker Tal circular trail presents the history of the valley and its historic landmarks. The focus is therefore not just on a single place, but also on the history explored along the trail's stops.
The border history trail in Wildeck has a different focus: it is approximately one kilometre long and presents the stages in the development of the border fortifications. Former border installations can be seen there. By comparison, the Historic Wildecker Tal circular trail focuses on the history of the valley and its landmarks. Blumenstein Castle adds medieval traces to these historical themes: the castle site lies in the woods above Wildecker Tal, near Raßdorf; what remains are a cross-trench and the castle's cellar walls.
Events and regional context
Wildeck's events include the annual Richelsdorf equestrian and show-jumping festival, which attracts visitors from all over Germany. It traditionally takes place at Whitsun; exact dates and the programme may change. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates and programme for the relevant edition.
The wider Hersfeld-Rotenburg destination is also home to the Bad Hersfeld Festival, held annually in the collegiate church ruins since 1951. In Bad Hersfeld, the Lullusfest has also been celebrated every year without interruption since 852, during the week of 16 October, in honour of the city's founder, Lullus. These dates offer a broader view of the region; both events take place in Bad Hersfeld.
