Friedewald combines local history with nature experiences in the surrounding area. The moated castle and local history museum offer different historical perspectives; at Dreienberg, the focus is on forests, a nature reserve and hiking routes. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you would prefer to explore the castle and museum, plan a hike or combine both.

Nature and trails at Dreienberg

Dreienberg is in the area surrounding Friedewald. On its plateau and slopes, you will find calcareous beech forests of the Perlgras-Buchenwald, Platterbsen-Buchenwald and Orchideen-Buchenwald types. The area around Dreienberg was designated a nature reserve in 1986. Together with Landecker Berg, Dreienberg forms the watershed between the Werra and Fulda rivers. This means that the forests and nature reserve are part of a striking geographical setting.

On the Extratour Dreienberg trail, you can see lime-loving plants such as numerous orchid species and silver thistles along the way. Information boards add details about flora and fauna, historical background and geological features to the hike. The nature reserve can be explored from three hiking car parks via a panoramic trail that passes the foundations of Dreienburg. These details offer several points to consider when planning: plants and information boards shape the trail, as do its historical and geological themes.

Moated castle and regional tours

Friedewald Moated Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1302. Visitors can explore it independently using a guided audio tour: simply scan the QR codes at the stops with your mobile phone. The Kuppenrhön Cycle Route and Lutherweg1521 pass by the castle. The 30-kilometre Kuppenrhön Tour is suitable for a day trip through the hilly landscape of the northern Rhön; along the route, the fortified ruins of Friedewald Moated Castle are one of the historic sights.

These options offer different focuses: the audio tour lets you explore the moated castle independently, stop by stop, while the route information places the castle within broader cycling and hiking themes. To choose between them, you can consider the specific differences: exploring the castle on site, or following a 30-kilometre route through the northern Rhön on the Kuppenrhön Tour.

Friedewald Local History Museum

Friedewald Local History Museum focuses on the region’s traditional crafts and farming heritage. Most of the objects on display date from 1850 to 1940. In contrast to the moated castle, first mentioned in a document in 1302, the museum offers a glimpse into the region through objects from a much later period.

Groups can visit the local history museum outside regular opening hours by prior arrangement. On request, the local history association offers a full-day programme with a local guide, lunch, coffee and dinner. Confirm that this programme is available when booking.

Cultural events in the wider destination

The wider Hersfeld-Rotenburg destination also has annual cultural events. The Bad Hersfeld Festival has been held every year in the collegiate church ruins since 1951. The Lullusfest in Bad Hersfeld has been celebrated every year without interruption since 852, during the week of 16 October, in honour of the town’s founder, Lullus. These events provide an additional point of reference when planning your trip around more than Friedewald’s castle, museum and nature attractions.
