There are several themes to choose from for a stay in Nentershausen: castle and local history, mining, churches and cycling. Tannenberg Castle, the Local History and Mining Museum, and a 36-kilometre cycling loop each offer a different way to explore the history of the town and the Richelsdorf Mountains. The castle festival and cultural events in the wider Hersfeld-Rotenburg destination may also be important when planning your trip.

Castle and Mining History

Tannenberg Castle was built around 1300 by Ludwig I of Baumbach and was a fief castle of Hersfeld Abbey. The Local History and Mining Museum offers another historical focus: it is dedicated to mining in the Richelsdorf Mountains from the 15th to the 20th century. The minerals covered include copper, cobalt and baryte. The museum’s subject therefore spans several centuries and different forms of mining.

The Local History and Mining Museum is located at Ruhl 2 in Nentershausen. Activities on the museum grounds include rides on a mine train. You can explore Tannenburg Castle independently; there is also a castle shop and a castle-themed riddle for children. Tannenburg Castle also has a rustic inn with a beer garden. Check the latest information about the mine train and inn before your visit, as operating arrangements may change.

Local Sights and Churches

A village lime tree, approximately 600 years old, stands in the market square. The Evangelical Church in Nentershausen has Baroque paintings in its interior. In Mönchhosbach, the church is considered one of the twelve most beautiful half-timbered churches in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district. These three sights offer different points of interest: an old tree in the townscape, the decoration of a church interior and half-timbered architecture.

Cycling and Routes

The GlĂĽck-Auf Cycle Route is a 36-kilometre loop focused on the mining history of the Richelsdorf Mountains and includes Nentershausen. The route passes the mining museum. It runs mainly along cycle paths and farm tracks without motor traffic; short sections follow lightly trafficked country roads. This distinction is important for finding your way along the route: most of it is separated from motor traffic, but the country-road sections are part of it.

Another route to consider is the Werra Castle Trail, which starts in Nentershausen. This provides different details for planning: the GlĂĽck-Auf Cycle Route is described by its length and circular course, while the Werra Castle Trail is identified by its starting point. The cycling loop also connects its mining theme with a stop at the museum; the trail is a separate route option in the area.

Events in Nentershausen and Hersfeld-Rotenburg

The Nentershausen Castle Festival takes place every year on the first weekend in October, with more than 600 performers. Check the exact event dates for the relevant year before planning. This lets you include the festival as a specific event without relying on the recurring weekend pattern alone to determine your travel dates.

The wider Hersfeld-Rotenburg destination also has cultural events that recur annually. In Bad Hersfeld, the festival has been held every year in the collegiate church ruins since 1951. The Lullus Festival has been celebrated there every year without interruption since 852, during the week of October 16, in honour of the town’s founder, Lullus. These events take place in Bad Hersfeld; in Nentershausen itself, the Castle Festival is the October event mentioned here.
