Starting Point and Directions
The Herzberger Ritter starts at the Mittelstraße hiking car park in Breitenbach am Herzberg. The “Breitenbach(Herzberg) Kirche” bus stop is about 250 metres from the trail’s starting point. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetable in advance. This way, the short distance between the stop and the start of the trail provides useful guidance without implying a particular service frequency.
Herzberg Castle and Its Views
Herzberg Castle is considered the largest hilltop castle in Hesse. From its castle walls, the panoramic view can extend almost 100 kilometres on clear days with good visibility. This makes the castle a special destination for anyone interested in castles and far-reaching views; the viewing distance remains expressly dependent on the weather and visibility conditions.
The Luther Trail 1521 is also marked at the castle: a pilgrim cross near the castle gate marks the castle as the highest point on the trail. Another Luther Trail stamp station is located to the left before the castle gate. If you plan to stop there, check before your visit whether the stamp station is available.
Hiking and Event Dates
The Herzberger Ritter has a specific local starting point at the Mittelstraße hiking car park. The Luther Trail 1521, by contrast, places Breitenbach within a longer pilgrimage route: this pilgrimage and hiking trail retraces Martin Luther’s historic journey from Worms to Wartburg Castle near Eisenach over around 400 kilometres. In the area around Niederaula and Breitenbach am Herzberg, it passes through Rotkäppchenland. These details answer different questions: the car park helps you find the start of the Herzberger Ritter, while the Luther Trail describes a long-distance route.
Various events take place at Herzberg Castle and on its castle meadows. In Hatterode, a village belonging to the municipality, the Wanderfreunde hiking day is held every year in August. If you want to plan your trip around an event, check the relevant dates before travelling.
Silbersee, Camping and Dining
Swimming and paddling are possible at Silbersee; fishing is permitted at the fish ponds of the Silbersee leisure centre. The recreation centre in Breitenbach am Herzberg comprises a restaurant, a lake and a campsite. Herzberger Campingwelt is on the edge of town, right by Silbersee. If the lake is the main focus of your stay, you can include this campsite in your accommodation plans.
The “Seeblick Silbersee” restaurant is right by the campsite and serves regional cuisine with a view of Silbersee. Herzberg Castle also has a castle restaurant and a sheltered beer garden. If you plan to stop for a meal, check the current opening hours in advance.
