Eichenzell’s Little Palace has a history stretching back more than 700 years. At Rippberg, basalt boulders, various animal species and valuable stands of trees shape an area for nature and recreation. Eichenzell thus brings together cultural history and nature. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the different highlights—and, for the trails at Rippberg, their length and guided-tour arrangements.

Local history

During interior renovations at Eichenzell’s Little Palace, it was discovered that the Ebersberg family had a residence or tower castle there as early as around 1250 to 1260. The Eichenzell Local History Museum offers a different focus: across 180 m², it provides insights into the culture and way of life of people in and around Eichenzell. Its topics include prehistory and early history, as well as the origins and development of the town.

The Little Palace and the Local History Museum offer different perspectives on the past: the palace brings the building’s long history and the Ebersberg family to life, while the museum focuses on the town’s development and way of life. This distinction can help you choose the cultural topic that interests you most on your trip.

Fasanerie Palace: courtly living culture and park

Fasanerie Palace houses a museum of courtly living culture, with grand reception rooms and lavishly furnished living quarters. The porcelain collection includes court tableware from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as porcelain figures from the royal manufactories in Meissen, Berlin, Copenhagen and Sèvres. The rooms and collection highlight courtly culture and its furnishings.

The park at Fasanerie Palace covers about 100 hectares. Its landscape features meadows, flower beds, artfully designed lakes and paths, as well as fields, loosely arranged groups of trees and a forest crisscrossed by avenues. The palace thus brings courtly living culture together with a varied, landscaped park—a different focus from the Local History Museum’s account of the town’s past or the natural area at Rippberg.

The watchtower and views of the surrounding area

Eichenzell’s watchtower was built in the 12th century along with seven other towers, as a signal tower for nearby Fulda. Today it stands on a conveniently elevated site and offers far-reaching views of the surrounding area. Its signaling role and the views it affords provide two different ways to understand the watchtower: as part of regional history and as a viewpoint.

Woodland and trails at Rippberg

Rippberg is part of Eichenzell’s municipal forest, which covers around 315 hectares. Basalt boulders, various animal species and valuable stands of trees shape this area for nature and recreation. If you are interested in the trails, consider not only their length but also how they are organized.

The Albert Schweitzer Trail is about 950 meters long and follows a well-maintained, easy-to-walk path that passes through the designated core zone of the Eichenzell primeval forest. Guided tours explain the philosophical quotations on how to treat creation and relate Albert Schweitzer’s statements to issues facing us today. As arrangements may change, it is advisable to confirm that a guided tour is available before making plans.

The Tree Species Trail is a guided forest walk of about two kilometers through Rippberg and over its summit; notable trees are introduced along the way. The trail is not signposted and can only be walked on a guided tour led by former district forester Norbert Hahnel. Confirm that this tour is available before your visit. The two offerings therefore differ both in length and organization: the Albert Schweitzer Trail is surfaced and easy to walk, while the Tree Species Trail can only be explored as part of a guided tour.

Cycling in Eichenzell

For cycling plans, the Hessian long-distance cycle routes R1, R2 and R3 offer another useful point of reference: all three pass through the municipality of Eichenzell.
