The Brothers Grimm Fairy-Tale Trail at Haselsee, the leisure activities in Praforst City Forest and several cultural venues give Hünfeld a range of options for a stay. Here, fairy-tale characters and stories meet walking trails and sports activities, as well as church architecture and museums. When looking for a hotel in Hünfeld, you can first consider whether culture, active time outdoors or a mix of both will shape your trip.
Fairy-Tale Trail and Haselsee
In Hünfeld, the Brothers Grimm Fairy-Tale Trail runs around Haselsee in the Seefläche Haselgrund leisure area. Along the trail are five life-size figures and groups of figures, created by five different artists. On special request, storytellers can be arranged for groups to accompany them on the trail. In front of the figures, they tell stories including “Town Musicians of Bremen” and “The Frog Prince”; advance arrangements are required.
Pedal boats and rowing boats can be rented at the Haselsee leisure area, which also has a children's playground. Boat rentals may be seasonal. Check whether this service is available during your visit.
Praforst City Forest: Trails and leisure
Praforst City Forest has signposted hiking trails and a cycling network. Other facilities include a fitness trail, mini golf, a fishing spot, a children's playground and a pond complex. The golf course has an 18-hole and a 9-hole course. The activities offer a range of options, from hiking and cycling to fitness, mini golf, golf and fishing.
The city forest is also home to a campsite and the St. Hubertus Praforst forest restaurant. If you plan to stay at the campsite or eat at the restaurant, check availability or opening hours in advance.
Cycling: route and network
One cycling route described in detail is the 27-kilometer Kegelspiel Cycle Path. It starts in Hünfeld and runs through the Haunetal valley via Burghaun and Eiterfeld to Rasdorf, passing through the Hessisches Kegelspiel, a unique mountain formation in the Kuppenrhön. For most of its length, the path follows the route of the former Hünfeld–Wenigentaft railway line, and the gradients are very gentle.
Praforst City Forest also has a cycling network. These offer different points to consider when planning: the Kegelspiel Cycle Path is described by its length and route through the places named, while Praforst is an area with a network of cycling routes.
Church and museums
The Monastery Church of St. Boniface, belonging to the Oblates of the Immaculate Virgin Mary (OMI), was built in Hünfeld between 1897 and 1900 by Paderborn architect Arnold Güldenpfennig. It is a cruciform, three-aisled basilica in Romanesque Revival style. Bishop Adalbert of Fulda consecrated it on April 6, 1900. The details about the floor plan, the church's aisles and its architectural style describe different aspects of the building.
The Konrad Zuse Museum Hünfeld, covering the history of the town and district, is located at Kirchplatz 4–6. The Railway Museum is at Gartenstraße 5 and is an outpost of the Konrad Zuse Museum. The Celtic farmstead at Mackenzell, at Zum Germanendorf 12, is also an outpost of the museum. Other highlights include the Museum Modern Art Hünfeld at Hersfelder Straße 25 and “Das Offene Buch” (The Open Book) of the town of Hünfeld, which has developed into an open-air museum since 1996. Hünfeld therefore offers themes spanning local and district history, railways, modern art and open-air museums.
