Discover Neuhof via a variety of routes and themes: the Hessian long-distance cycle route R3 runs right through the town centre, while the Planetary Trail and the Kali Trail each have their own focus. There are also panoramic trails and traces of history. When looking for a hotel in Neuhof, it can be helpful to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay: cycling, a themed hike or local history.

Cycling on the R3

The R3, also known as the Rhine-Main-Kinzig Cycle Route, runs from Rüdesheim am Rhein to Tann in the Hessian Rhön and passes right through the town centre of Neuhof. At the edge of town in the direction of Dorfborn, the Neuhof pump track is located directly alongside the R3 cycle route.

The facility has a separate kids’ track. Its accessible design also makes it suitable for wheelchair users. A dedicated track for children and access for wheelchair users are therefore among the facility’s features. Together with the long-distance cycle route that runs through the town centre, it makes cycling a clear focus for a stay in Neuhof.

Two themed trails with different focuses

Opened in 1999, the Planetary Trail connects Neuhof and Kalbach and is about ten kilometres long. Along the way, eleven information boards share facts about the sun, moons, planets and comets. The trail starts above the large bus parking area at Johannes Kepler School, by the sun information board. Its starting point and information boards give the route a clear astronomical focus.

Created in 2023, the anniversary themed hiking trail “The Kali Trail” is a 17.4-kilometre circular route. It starts in the centre of Neuhof and loops in a wide arc around the municipality; it is aimed at both residents and tourists. Five information boards cover potash mining in Neuhof and the Fulda/Werra potash mining district. Topics range from the history of the Neuhof works and working above and below ground to geology and the uses of potash products.

The two hiking trails differ both in length and subject: at about ten kilometres, the Planetary Trail focuses on astronomical topics, while the longer Kali Trail is a circular route centred on mining and geology. This gives you a practical way to choose a route based on its length and your interests.

Panoramic trails and traces of history

The Opperzer Berg Panorama Trail passes the bee learning centre, the Marien Grotto and St. Michael’s Church. The Fliedetal+Kemmete Panorama Trail has a different character: it follows the Fliede in the direction of Neuhof, crosses a landscaped path over the motorway tunnel with benches and viewpoints, and then returns through Neuhof to Dallesplatz. The two trails can therefore be distinguished by the landmarks and landscapes described along their routes.

History can also be explored through specific places. A visible old section of the Via Regia has been preserved between Neuhof-Ellers and Fulda; today, it is once again part of the Way of St. James towards Frankfurt. Neuhof Water Castle was originally built as a castle and fortified around 1250 by Prince-Abbot Heinrich IV of Erthal (1249–1261) with new walls, fences and ditches.

Carnival is also part of local culture, celebrated in the municipality of Neuhof with great dedication and ingenuity. When planning a stay, you can therefore consider not only cycling and hiking, but also historic routes, architectural history and living local culture as different interests.
