A stay in Alsbach-Hähnlein can have different focal points. The local history museum in Hähnlein features items from everyday life; the Jewish cemetery in Alsbach tells a story that reaches beyond the town. For outdoor activities, there is a network of hiking trails and a mountain bike trail. This allows you to focus on culture, history and outdoor activities according to your interests.
Getting here and getting around
Regional trains towards Bensheim/Heidelberg and Darmstadt/Frankfurt stop at “Hähnlein-Alsbach” station. These directions provide an initial guide for your journey. Check the current timetable for your chosen travel date before setting off.
Alsbach-Hähnlein has a network of hiking trails and a mountain bike trail for outdoor activities. This gives you two different options: walking or riding a mountain bike. For several years, the municipality has taken part in the “Stadtradeln” cycling initiative. During the respective campaign periods, people can cycle on behalf of the municipality if they live or work in Alsbach-Hähnlein, belong to a club there or attend school there. Campaign periods vary from year to year; check the dates for the relevant year if you wish to take part. These requirements apply to participation in Stadtradeln and are separate from the general choice of whether to walk or ride a mountain bike.
Local history museum and Jewish history
The Alsbach-Hähnlein Local History Museum is located in the Alte Bürgermeisterei in Hähnlein. It displays noteworthy items from everyday life and regularly hosts special exhibitions that attract visitors from the surrounding area and further afield. In addition to the collection, the changing exhibitions offer further topics to explore during a visit. If you plan to visit the museum, it is worth checking the current exhibition programme.
The Jewish cemetery in Alsbach offers a long historical perspective. From 1616 to 1948, Jewish people from 32 surrounding towns and villages were buried there; these places are now in the districts of Darmstadt-Dieburg, Groß-Gerau and Bergstraße. The time span and number of places of origin illustrate the cemetery’s significance beyond Alsbach. The museum association regularly leads tours of the cemetery for interested visitors. For specific dates and access arrangements, please check the association’s current information.
The castle grounds and other places to visit
The “Wiedemann am Schloss” playground is designed as an adventure playground with a castle theme. It is located right next to Alsbach Castle, on the edge of—or in the middle of—the Alsbach Forest. The municipality announced its opening in May 2024. The Melibokus Tower is also easy to reach from Alsbach Castle.
As a broader regional context, the Darmstadt-Dieburg destination offers further attractions of its own. The family cycling route in the district runs from Erzhausen to Seeheim-Jugenheim and is approximately 40 kilometres long. Another highlight is the Messel Pit UNESCO World Heritage Site: this fossil site preserves a wide variety of exceptionally well-preserved fossils documenting the history of the Earth 47 million years ago. The visitor centre explains the history and significance of Germany’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. These regional attractions are on a different scale and complement the decision of whether to focus your stay primarily on the local history museum, the cemetery or activities in Alsbach-Hähnlein.
