Babenhausen combines digital city exploration with a historic old town and distinctive buildings. Activities range from multimedia smartphone tours to an outdoor walk around the castle, each offering a different cultural focus.
Digital Tour and Old Town Walk
Babenhausen offers two multimedia experiences for smartphones: “Animal Market Square” and “Commemorative Culture in Babenhausen.” Both are part of the Actionbound offering; you need an internet-enabled device and the Actionbound app to use them. The “Commemorative Culture in Babenhausen” tour is generally aimed at adults and people interested in history, and is also suitable for history lessons with school classes. Allow approximately 70 minutes. It starts at the market square and leads through the town center. This makes it a clearly defined activity with a specific duration and theme; the old town can also be explored on foot or by bicycle.
Historic Buildings
The Witch’s Tower is Babenhausen’s landmark and is located in the old town, where you can also find remnants of the former town wall and half-timbered houses. Highlights of the town church include its carved altar, remains of medieval frescoes, and the Count’s pew. You can walk around Babenhausen Castle and view it from the outside; it is currently undergoing renovations.
Babenhausen Outdoor Pool
The outdoor pool has stainless-steel pools for swimmers and non-swimmers, a wide water slide, and diving towers with heights of 1 and 3 meters. The 2026 outdoor pool season has ended. If the pool is to be a focus of your trip, check the seasonal dates that apply to your visit.
Darmstadt-Dieburg as the Wider Region
The wider travel destination of Darmstadt-Dieburg encompasses the Hessian Rhine Plain, the Untermain Plain, the Messel Hills, the Reinheim Hills, the Vorderer Odenwald, and the Sandstone Odenwald. The Bergstraße forms a striking transition between the Rhine Plain and the Odenwald. The district’s landscape therefore ranges from plains and hills to the Odenwald regions. At Reinheimer Teich, surrounded by meadows and fields, you can experience the landscape along a circular trail and from numerous benches. Pfungstädter Moor consists of three sections, covers around 103 hectares, and can be explored on designated paths.
A distinct cultural and historical highlight in the wider travel destination is the Messel Pit UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fossil site contains a rich variety of exceptionally well-preserved fossils that document the history of the Earth 47 million years ago. The visitor center explains the history and significance of Germany’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Outdoor activities also take place on a regional scale: Darmstadt-Dieburg has an extensive network of well-marked trails for hiking, walking, and Nordic walking. The family cycling route runs through the district from Erzhausen to Seeheim-Jugenheim and is about 40 kilometers long. Check current route conditions before setting out on a specific trip. Other themed cycling routes follow the small rivers Modau and Gersprenz; there is also the Gourmet Cycling Route.
