Six named hiking trails in Otzberg offer a choice of about 1.5 to about 7.5 hours. There is also the view from the Weiße Rübe and historic buildings in Habitzheim. If you want to plan how much time to set aside for a hike, you can choose from different distances and approximate walking times; the starting and ending points are named for each route.

Choose hiking trails by time and distance

  • The Märkerwald Trail is 4.5 km long, takes about 1.5 hours, and starts and ends at the Schmelzmühle in Ober-Klingen.
  • The Otzberg Trail (NK1) is 6.5 km long, takes about 2 hours, and starts and ends at the Hollergraben hiking car park.
  • The Ohmbuckel Trail (NK2) is 12.5 km long, takes about 3.5 hours, and starts and ends at the sports hall in Nieder-Klingen.
  • The Rondel Trail is 6.9 km long, takes about 2.25 hours, and starts and ends at the Bettelmannsbuche in Ober-Nauses.
  • The Schloß-Nauses Trail is 8.3 km long, takes about 2.5 hours, and starts and ends at the nature park car park in Hering.
  • The Sparkassen Anniversary Trail through the Reinheimer Hügelland is 23.1 km long, takes about 7.5 hours, and starts and ends at the Old Town Hall in Lengfeld.

For a shorter hike, choose the Märkerwald Trail, which takes about 1.5 hours, or the Otzberg Trail, which takes about 2 hours. The Rondel Trail and the Schloß-Nauses Trail take around 2.25 and 2.5 hours, respectively, and are similar in duration; their distances are 6.9 and 8.3 km. At the longer end of the range is the Sparkassen Anniversary Trail, which takes about 7.5 hours. These details help you estimate how much time to allow for each hike, without assuming a particular walking speed.

Views and architectural history in Otzberg

From the Weiße Rübe, the keep of Veste Otzberg, the view extends across the Odenwald, the Bergstraße and the Rhine-Main region. In Habitzheim, historic buildings include the castle, built around 1500, the Protestant church dating from 1741, and the Catholic Church of St. Cyriacus, dating from 1858. The three buildings mark different periods in the history of the town.

The Hofgut Habitzheim also combines a historic site with present-day use: it was established on the grounds of the former castle. The zu Löwenstein family still lives and works there today. Habitzheim thus offers both historic buildings and an estate that remains in use to this day.

A barbecue area in Nieder-Klingen

The Hollergraben barbecue area is in the district of Nieder-Klingen. The Nieder-Klingen-Aktiv e. V. association maintains and looks after the area; it is rented through the association. If you would like to include the barbecue area in your plans, contact the association about renting it.

Explore more of the Darmstadt-Dieburg destination

The wider destination of Darmstadt-Dieburg encompasses a variety of landscapes: the Hessian Rhine Plain, the Untermain Plain, the Messeler Hügelland, the Reinheimer Hügelland, the Vorderer Odenwald and the Sandsteinodenwald. In the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg, the Bergstraße forms a striking transition between the Rhine Plain and the Odenwald. This places the view from the Weiße Rübe within a wider landscape setting.

Another cultural highlight in the wider destination of Darmstadt-Dieburg is the Messel Pit UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fossil site is known for its uniquely well-preserved and diverse fossils, which document the history of the Earth’s development 47 million years ago. The visitor centre presents the history and significance of Germany’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
