Buchholz draws attention to village architecture and heritage conservation: the fieldstone church and a farmstead on Hauptstraße represent different facets of the village’s history.

Village Church and Farmstead in Buchholz

As of 1 January 2025, the Brandenburg Register of Monuments lists Buchholz Village Church under reference number 09160059. It is a fieldstone hall church dating from the early 14th century. Its roof structure dates from 1394/95; other features include a neo-Gothic brick roof turret from the 19th century, a carved altar dating from around 1700, and an organ built by Wilhelm Remler of Berlin in 1856.

The building and furnishings trace several periods: from the medieval church to the roof structure and later additions. The altar dating from around 1700 and the 1856 organ mark two distinct points in the history of the church’s furnishings.

The register also lists the farmstead at Hauptstraße 5. It comprises a residential house and four agricultural buildings, as well as a paved courtyard and an enclosure. Unlike the church, the focus here is on the relationship between the residential and agricultural buildings. The courtyard paving and enclosure add to the description of the ensemble.

Cultural History in the Wider Destination of Pritzwalk

In the wider destination of Pritzwalk, the Museumsfabrik focuses on the history of the town and its industry. The cultural history museum explores the history of the town and surrounding area, industrialisation in rural areas, and the history of the brewery and cloth factory. The activities described include interactive themed tours and hands-on activities in an in-house print shop and textile workshop. As the programme may change, it is worth checking the current offerings before your visit. An observation platform offers views over Pritzwalk and the surrounding area.

Pritzwalk’s architectural history also spans different periods. St. Nicholas Church preserves remnants of a medieval fieldstone building; its neo-Gothic church tower is 72 metres high and dates from 1882. The Neoclassical town hall on the market square was completed in 1829. On Dömnitz Island, the cloth factory and brewery site have been preserved as monuments of 19th- and 20th-century industrial architecture.

Woodland, Routes and Seasonal Activities in Pritzwalk

Hainholz, on the northeastern edge of Pritzwalk, is a 250-hectare woodland with a well-developed network of paths. Several themed routes pass through the woods; there is also a paved cycle path to Streckenthin. As surfaces can change, check the condition of the path before setting out on a bike ride. The Hainholz Nature Conservation Centre offers a natural history exhibition and a forest education programme. Trappenberg, a small wood used by walkers, is also located south of Pritzwalk.

A green belt encircles the historic town centre for a walk around Pritzwalk’s old town; the walk takes about 30 minutes on foot. Seasonal activities offer a different timeframe: at the Pritzwalk blueberry plantation, you can pick your own berries from early July to late August, and the fruit is also sold in the farm shop. The season and picking opportunities may vary from one harvest year to another.
