Oranienburg Palace, the memorial and museum at Sachsenhausen, and several cycling routes offer different ways to experience a stay in Oranienburg. You can choose between Baroque art, the history of the memorial site, and routes that start in the town, pass through it or run alongside the palace.

Palace Museum and Architectural History

Oranienburg Palace is one of the most important Baroque buildings in the March of Brandenburg. The palace museum displays, among other things, paintings featuring masterpieces by the Flemish artist Anthonis van Dyck, as well as selected examples of royal ceremonial silver in the Silver Vault. An exhibition room of the Oberhavel Regional Museum in the palace is devoted exclusively to the history of Oranienburg Palace: its timeline runs from the Ascanian castle built around 1200 to its present-day use.

Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum

The Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum commemorates, at the historic site, the history of Sachsenhausen concentration camp (1936–1945), Soviet Special Camp No. 1/7 (1945–1950), and the establishment of the National Memorial and Museum (1945–1961). Thirteen permanent exhibitions can be visited in the surviving camp buildings. Each exhibition’s thematic focus is connected to the corresponding site; the memorial also offers an extensive educational program.

Cycling Routes and Their Courses

The 300 km Regional Park Route “Around Berlin” runs through the Oranienburg urban area, coming from Leegebruch, passing through Eden and continuing to the palace, then through the town center and on via the Lehnitz lock to Schmachtenhagen and Wensickendorf. The approximately 300 km Fontane Cycle Route starts in Oranienburg and leads through Brandenburg in the footsteps of the poet and thinker Theodor Fontane. Although the stated route lengths are similar, the specific information about Oranienburg differs: for the Regional Park Route, the course through the urban area is specified, while for the Fontane Cycle Route, the starting point of the route through Brandenburg is given.

The 50 km Hollanders’ Circular Route connects Liebenwalde and Oranienburg. The 215 km Lakes and Culture Cycle Route, by contrast, is a circular route in the Ruppin region that connects Neuruppin, Rheinsberg and Oranienburg, among other places. Historic Town Centers Route 2 runs directly alongside Oranienburg Palace and forms a circular route between Gransee and Kremmen. According to the published distances, the Hollanders’ Circular Route is clearly shorter than the Lakes and Culture Cycle Route; the 300 km Regional Park Route and the approximately 300 km Fontane Cycle Route are longer still. Check the conditions of each route before setting out.
