Ziegenhals offers three different perspectives to help you plan your visit: the “Am Großen Zug” natural swimming area is a place to relax by the water, a canoe trip passes through the area, and the “Sporthaus Ziegenhals” (Ziegenhals Sports House) holds remnants of the former Ernst Thälmann Memorial. You can decide whether you want to focus your stay on time by the lake, a boat trip or history. The wider destination of Königs Wusterhausen adds its own cultural and nature attractions to these themes.

Am Großen Zug: Swimming Area and Boat Trip

The Großer Zug is a lake between Ziegenhals and Niederlehme. It flows into the Krossinsee to the north and the Dahme to the south. The nearby “Am Großen Zug” natural swimming area has a tree-lined sunbathing lawn, a shallow, sandy access to the lake and a beach volleyball court. It offers visitors a chance to cool off and relax.

A restaurant serving Croatian cuisine, with a terrace right by the water’s edge, is next to the swimming area. As restaurant details may change, check them before your visit.

The guest moorings at Nicos Hafen are right on the Großer Zug and make a good stop during a boat trip. Check the current availability before setting out. One named route option is the “Kleine Umfahrt Zeuthen – Rundfahrt um die Halbinsel Rauchfangswerder” canoe trip: it passes Ziegenhals and continues to the Krossinsee.

Getting There and Traces of History

When PlusBus route 428 was introduced in 2024, a direct service between Erkner and Königs Wusterhausen was established; at the time, the route also served Ziegenhals. Check the current timetable before travelling.

A heritage-list entry dated January 1, 2025, identifies the motorboat “Charlotte” and stored items from the former memorial as remnants of the Ernst Thälmann Memorial at the “Sporthaus Ziegenhals.” This clearly distinguishes the historical traces from the area’s water-based activities.

In the Wider Destination of Königs Wusterhausen

Schloss Königs Wusterhausen served as the seat of government for Frederick William I and was the meeting place of the legendary Tobacco Cabinet. The Dahmeland Museum has a permanent exhibition on the history of the Dahmeland and the town of Königs Wusterhausen, complemented by changing special exhibitions. In Königs Wusterhausen, three museums within walking distance of the railway station tell the town’s history from different perspectives.

The Tiergarten also offers its own focus on nature and history: today it is a diverse mixed deciduous forest and nature reserve; in 1725, it was established as a game preserve for the Soldier King. The Tiergarten circular trail is 7.5 kilometres long and starts and ends at Königs Wusterhausen railway station or at the hiking car parks by the Tiergarten. Ten wooden sculptures bring aspects of local history to life. At the orchard, the route passes the “Die zwölf Weisen” stone circle, which has a barefoot path, a balancing beam and a rest area. The circular trail also runs along quiet stretches of the banks of the Staabe and the Krimnicksee.
