Stein Castle, routes through the town and along the Traun River, and a diverse cultural offering give Traunreut its many different facets.

Stein Castle and the Castle Brewery

Stein Castle on the Traun is a three-part complex comprising the upper castle, a cave or rock castle, and the still-inhabited castle. The cave castle is considered the largest and best-preserved of its kind in Germany. Its interior is accessible only with a castle guide; check visitor information before you travel. Tours of the cave castle can be combined with a brewery tour of the Stein Castle Brewery. Booking arrangements may change.

The Castle Brewery produces beer and organic beer specialties and offers tours. Its tradition dates back more than 530 years. When planning a visit, combining it with the cave castle is one way to experience two different tours. The hermitage near Stein Castle is open to visitors once a year, on the Sunday of the parish fair. Check the date before you travel.

Discover the town’s history along its trails

The Traunreut History Trail explores the development of the Muna munitions factory from the 1940s into today’s town of Traunreut. Tours along the trail can be booked on request through the town hall. The History Trail is accessible year-round; seasonal access conditions may vary. Its historical focus sets it apart from the 8.8-kilometre Town Trail, which offers impressions of the young town and the surrounding landscape.

There are also suitable options for a day on foot beyond these circular routes: a scenic hiking route follows the gently flowing Traun River from Stein an der Traun to Altenmarkt. For a cycling trip, the Traunreut Cycling Trail consists of five sections ranging from 8 to 14 kilometres. It passes through unspoiled villages and hamlets and through the Traun Valley along the Traun River.

Culture, art and events

The k1 in Traunreut hosts concerts, cabaret and theatre, as well as lectures, congresses, conferences and balls. The cultural and events centre offers a varied programme of more than 200 events; the programme changes over time. If you are planning your trip around an event, check what is currently on. Another venue is the Theaterfabrik, with its theatre café, Blackbox and auditorium. Concerts, films, theatre, open stages and cabaret are all part of its programme.

The bronze sculpture Flute Player by Munich sculptor Marlene Neubauer-Woerner stands at the fountain by Traunreut Town Hall. The local history museum also explores the regions of origin of Traunreut’s residents. The pilgrimage chapel Frauenbrunn in Traunwalchen features elaborately designed altar and votive panels. Among the city area’s particularly noteworthy churches and chapels are the Catholic church in Irsing and St. Michael’s Castle Chapel in Stein an der Traun. The Romanian Orthodox church is one example of the town’s cultural diversity.

Plan your journey and hotel search

Traunreut is connected to the rail network of southeastern Bavaria by regular services. Bicycles can usually be taken on regional trains free of charge; check the applicable rail and bicycle regulations before travelling. This lets you plan your journey around whether you intend to get around mainly on foot, by bike or for cultural events.
