Tacherting offers several distinct starting points for a trip: trails in St. Michael, the Traun-Alz Cycle Path running through the town, and stories spanning the Middle Ages to the history of brewing. The options differ in character and planning: a circular trail and a short barefoot path are different activities from a bike tour, a museum visit by appointment or a look at local history.

Walking in St. Michael

The circular trail in St. Michael is suitable for families, pushchairs and people with limited mobility. Another path invites you to experience Tacherting’s natural surroundings barefoot along approximately 100 metres and 15 stations with different types of ground. If you are choosing with a pushchair or limited mobility in mind, the circular trail is a suitable option; for a short nature experience across different surfaces, the second path is the clear choice.

Cycling and hiking destinations in the Alz Valley

The Traun-Alz Cycle Path runs through Tacherting. In the wider region, hiking trails in the Alz Valley connect the surrounding area with the castle of the robber baron Heinz von Stein an der Traun, the pilgrimage town of Altötting and the Baroque collegiate church of Baumburg. This places the cycle route through the town and regional hiking destinations side by side at different scales. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on cycling in Tacherting or hiking destinations in the Alz Valley.

School museum and local history

Visits to the Chiemgau School Museum are possible by appointment; visitors can hear anecdotes from times gone by. Arrange your visit in advance. The Mussenmühle mill is also part of Tacherting’s history: its eventful past dates back to the 11th century.

It all began at Weißbräu Schwendl in 1935 with an 80-litre laundry boiler. Today, the fourth generation is in charge of the range of wheat beers. The two historical time frames are clearly distinct: the Mussenmühle’s history reaches far back, while the beginning of Weißbräu can be specifically dated to 1935. These different historical perspectives offer a choice between a visit to the museum by prior arrangement and a look at the town’s history.

Indoor swimming pool: date and current opening times

The municipality announced that the public would be able to use the Tacherting indoor swimming pool for the first time again on Monday, 21 September 2026. Public opening times may change; check the latest information before visiting.

The wider travel destination of Traunstein

The wider travel destination of Traunstein offers another regional perspective. The Chiemsee and Waginger See lakes, along with more than 170 alpine pastures and peaks reaching up to 2,000 metres in the Chiemgau Alps, are located in the district of Traunstein. The Seeoner Seen lakes are among its nature reserves; the Waginger and Tachinger See lakes are part of its protected landscape areas. This view takes in the wider landscape of the Traunstein travel destination and complements Tacherting’s specific trails and cultural themes.
