Nußdorf is a small, rural village surrounded by woodland, moorland and meadows. The village makes a good starting point for cycling, hiking and cultural excursions. A footpath to the Chiemsee shore and historic traces in Sondermoning and Aiging offer a range of options for day trips. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can use Nußdorf as a rural base and decide whether its blend of landscape, outdoor activities and culture fits your travel plans.

Rural Landscape and a Footpath to the Chiemsee

The footpath leads from Nußdorf via Eglsee to the Chiemsee shore; the distance is about five kilometres. Eglsee is a named stop along the way, while the lakeshore is the destination. You can plan the hike as a standalone option for the day; it differs from the cycling and cultural excursions also available in that it has a clearly defined destination by the water. This gives you a specific way to include Lake Chiemsee in your stay, alongside the rural scenery.

Cultural History in Sondermoning and Aiging

The branch church in Sondermoning houses a Late Gothic winged altar dating from 1480 to 1485; only a few such altars have survived in Upper Bavaria. Schloss Neuamerang, the seat of a Hofmark, was located in the municipal district of Sondermoning. Count Franz Guidobald Törring zu Pertenstein bought the Hofmark in 1694; by the mid-18th century, the castle was being used as a quarry. Sacred art and the history of a Hofmark thus sit alongside the later change in how the castle was used. The Sondermoning district is also home to a Celtic square enclosure, evidence of this cultural region’s settlement over many centuries.

The renovated Historic Inn in Aiging also dates back to 1471. It once stood on the old salt-trading route from Salzburg to Augsburg and was the setting for court hearings. The connection between the salt trade and the administration of justice sets the inn apart from the sacred art in Sondermoning and broadens the view of local and economic history.

Excursions on Lake Chiemsee

Nearby, Chiemsee steamers departing from Chieming offer a round trip on the lake or a visit to Fraueninsel. From spring to autumn, the Chiemsee Ring Bus route circles Lake Chiemsee directly by bus. The options differ in transport and destination: take a boat for a round trip or a visit to the island, or take the bus to circle the lake. Check the current boat and bus timetables before planning your trip.

The Wider Region: Traunstein District

For a broader regional perspective, it is worth looking at Traunstein district, which includes Lake Chiemsee and Lake Waginger See. The Chiemgau Alps are home to more than 170 alpine pastures and peaks reaching heights of up to 2,000 metres. This brings the Chiemgau Alps into view alongside the lakes at district level; Nußdorf itself is characterised by its rural landscape of woodland, moorland and meadows.
