A stay in Tittmoning offers two distinct focal points: the historic town with its castle and museum, and the Salzach river landscape. The 298-metre-long town square is itself a unified historic ensemble; in the Salzach floodplain, the floodplain circular trail and flatboat rides offer a different perspective. Tittmoning lies directly on the Salzach and thus on the border with Austria.

Castle, Museum and Townscape

The Rupertiwinkel Museum is housed in 23 historic exhibition rooms. The floors and ceilings are original features from the 17th century. Exhibits include prehistoric and early historic finds, as well as regional folk art. The collection also includes 130 Tittmoning shooting targets dating from 1600 to 1930. Historic rooms thus sit alongside collections spanning different periods.

Public guided tours of Tittmoning Castle and the Rupertiwinkel Museum run from 1 May to 3 October, Thursday to Sunday at 2 pm. They last about 1.5 hours; advance booking is not required. If you plan to join a tour, check the seasonal programme for your travel dates, as dates and times may change.

The Tannery Museum, housed in the former Marstall building of the Troadkasten, offers a different format. It documents the history of tanning in Tittmoning and is designed to be interactive and experimental: visitors learn through handling objects and trying things out for themselves. While the Rupertiwinkel Museum focuses on historic rooms and collections, hands-on exploration is an integral part of the museum experience here.

The town square and town walls also show the historic townscape on different scales. The square’s colourful façades are characteristic of the region’s Inn-Salzach style. The almost completely preserved town wall dates from the mid-13th century and surrounds the town centre and castle over a length of 1,700 metres. The unified square and the extensive fortifications thus represent two different aspects of the town’s history.

A Special Event in April

Since 2011, the Colloredo Market has been held every April as a two-day arts and crafts market in the historic castle complex. It gives a spring stay a specific occasion and differs from the townscape’s enduring character in being tied to an event date. The exact dates and vendors may vary. If the market is a deciding factor for your trip, check the date for the relevant year.

The Salzach Floodplain and Riverside Trails

The Salzach floodplain near Tittmoning is part of the FFH site 7744-371 “Salzach and Lower Inn” and belongs to the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. The flatboat landing stage is located at the Tittmoning Salzach Bridge in the floodplain. Flatboat rides depart from there and travel downstream on the Salzach towards Burghausen.

The floodplain circular trail also starts at the flatboat landing stage and passes through the natural river landscape along the Salzach. This offers two distinct ways to experience the river area: the flatboat ride follows the Salzach towards Burghausen, while the trail leads through the floodplain landscape. If you are planning a flatboat ride, check the available dates in advance for your travel period.

Plan Your Arrival and Accommodation Search

If you are travelling by train, note the destination: Tittmoning-WiesmĂĽhl station is about 7 kilometres from the town centre and is connected by a signposted cycle route. Check current connections before travelling. When searching for a hotel in Tittmoning, it helps to first decide on the focus of your stay: the old town, castle and museums, or the Salzach floodplain and its circular trail. Then tailor your search to your planned daily itinerary and check the location of each property.

Beyond the Town: Traunstein

For a broader trip, the wider destination of Traunstein offers a regional perspective beyond Tittmoning. Chiemsee and Waginger See are in the district of Traunstein; the area is also home to more than 170 alpine pastures and peaks reaching heights of up to 2,000 metres in the Chiemgau Alps. These lakes and higher elevations add other types of landscape in the region to the perspective on town history and the Salzach landscape.
