On the shores of Hofanger, swimming and water sports are just as much a part of Gstadt on Lake Chiemsee as paths through glacially shaped landscapes and gardens in Hofanger Nature Park. St. Peter’s Branch Church adds a historical dimension. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: time by the water, a themed trail in the nature park, a longer route or architectural history. These distinctions can help you choose what suits your interests in Gstadt without having to combine every activity into a single itinerary.
Water, islands and seasonal connections
On the shores of Hofanger in Gstadt, you can swim in Lake Chiemsee, play beach volleyball, sail and surf. The windsurfing school in Gstadt has been offering courses for beginners and advanced surfers since 1981. Courses and seasonal operations may change; if a course is important to your travel plans, ask about current availability in advance.
From the surf school, you can kayak alone or in a group to nearby Fraueninsel or the uninhabited Krautinsel, right next to it. Water conditions and operations may change, so check with the surf school in advance if you are planning a trip.
Passenger boats run from Gstadt to Fraueninsel and Herreninsel year-round. The onward journey to Prien takes 15 minutes. In summer, there is also a direct connection from Gstadt to Herreninsel. Your choice of connection therefore also depends on when you travel: the direct connection to Herreninsel operates in summer, while boats to both islands run year-round. Check the timetable before setting off.
Gardens and themed trails in Hofanger
Hofanger Nature Park has a rose garden, a medicinal plant demonstration garden and herb beds. A small stone labyrinth represents the “Path to the Center.” The Gstadt Mund-ART Trail complements the nature themes with six stops about flora and fauna. It is an easy trail in Hofanger Nature Park. The gardens and beds focus on plants; the stone labyrinth centers on the path to the center, while the Mund-ART Trail explores flora and fauna at its stops. If you plan to follow this trail, bear in mind that the signs on site may change, and follow the latest guidance.
Nature trails on different scales
The signposted nature trail passes through glacial landscapes along the north and west shores of Lake Chiemsee and by the Eggstätt Lakes. Its outer loop is about 42 kilometers long; from Gstadt, you can join some sections of the nature trail. So don’t assume that the outer loop’s full length is the same as a section you might follow from Gstadt.
The Chiemsee Circular Trail passes Keilbacher Bay and Mühlner Winkel on its way to Gstadt. The routes thus differ in the planning details mentioned: for the nature trail, the approximately 42-kilometer outer loop and the option to join partway from Gstadt are important; the Chiemsee Circular Trail passes two named places on its way to Gstadt. Trail conditions and route management may change. Check the latest information before planning a section.
Architectural history at St. Peter’s
St. Peter’s Branch Church in Gstadt is one of the oldest churches in the Chiemgau region. Its core structure is Romanesque. Around 1500, the church acquired a Gothic choir, and delicate Rococo ornaments were added around 1778. The different building phases give the site a distinct cultural and historical focus: architecture enthusiasts can identify Romanesque, Gothic and Rococo features within a single church building.
Choose accommodation to suit your travel plans
If you are looking for accommodation in Gstadt on Lake Chiemsee, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: water activities, island connections, nature trails or architectural history each appeal to different interests. Consider which of these will shape your trip, then check the relevant details, such as the season, timetable or current trail conditions.
