Pentling brings together several perspectives on local history and landscape: a chapel in the old town, a historic gate, a church with a biographical connection to Josef Ratzinger, and Schutzfelsen on the Danube valley. When planning your trip, you can then decide whether you are more interested in church and architectural history or geological features.

Churches, Architectural History and Pentling’s Past

Marienkapelle stands in the center of the old town. It was built in 1649, during the plague years after the end of the Thirty Years’ War. Its date links Pentling’s local history with the plague years and the postwar period.

The Old Gate stands at the southeastern edge of the former castle grounds in western Pentling. It is designed as a round-arched passageway with a pedestrian entrance and decorative crenellations, and forms part of a courtyard wall dating from the 16th century. The arch, entrance and crenellations give the structure its distinctive layout; its connection to the courtyard wall also places the gate within the area’s older architectural history.

The Catholic branch church of St. John the Baptist is known as the Pope’s Church. Josef Ratzinger served there as a pastor from 1969 to 2005, until his election as Pope Benedict XVI. The building may date in its essential structure to the 16th century and was remodeled in 1697. The possible earlier origin and the remodeling are two distinct chronological clues to the building’s history.

Another biographical connection is Joseph Ratzinger’s former home in Pentling. He had it built in 1969; in 2012, it opened as a museum and meeting place. The construction date and later opening mark two stages in the history of the house. Together with the Pope’s Church, they offer a picture of Pentling in which the town’s church history and Ratzinger’s life story are visible in different ways.

Schutzfelsen on the Danube Valley

Schutzfelsen, also known as Hoppefelsen, offers a different perspective. It lies on the rocky, steep slopes of the Danube valley at the edge of the Max-Schultze-Steig nature reserve and is one of Bavaria’s 100 award-winning geotopes. This geological feature takes its place alongside the area’s buildings. If you would like to combine nature and landscape with local history when choosing a destination, Pentling offers both kinds of points of interest.

More to explore in the broader Regensburg destination

The broader Regensburg destination also includes Walhalla, a Neoclassical memorial and hall of fame on the Danube. Since 1842, prominent Germans and people associated with German history have been honored there with marble busts and memorial plaques. The exterior is designed in the Doric style and has 52 columns. Here, the focus is on public recognition of historical figures, while Pentling’s attractions are shaped by themes including the church, local history and Ratzinger’s biographical connection.

From Easter to October, passenger boats operated by Klinger and Wurm & Noé run on the Danube between Regensburg’s Stone Bridge and the foot of Walhalla. Check the specific operating days before your trip. From the bus stop, the walk to Walhalla takes about 20 minutes and includes 358 steps. The walking time is approximate; trail conditions can also change, so it is worth checking for current information before setting out.

The Nepal Himalaya Park in Wiesent, also part of the broader Regensburg destination, offers another blend of culture and nature. Covering nine hectares, it combines Asian culture and nature with a Nepalese temple, a diverse perennial garden and numerous works of Asian art. The park includes a Himalayan garden and a Chinese garden, as well as more than 6,200 different plant species. This variety of gardens and plants offers a different emphasis from Walhalla’s Neoclassical design and commemorative purpose.
