At the Schlossberg in Regenstauf, historical memories, nature and present-day attractions come together. A castle on the Schlossberg was finally destroyed during the War of the Landshut Succession in 1504 and was never rebuilt. The site in the heart of Regenstauf was redesigned with nature in mind as part of a LEADER project and is a varied attraction for visitors of all ages.

History and attractions at the Schlossberg

The information centre at the Schlossberg explores the site’s nature and history. Two knight-themed playgrounds add a distinctive touch to what is on offer. In this way, the site combines historical content with a visitor area that also includes playgrounds, without limiting the experience to just one type of visit.

The observation tower at the Schlossberg offers views of the surrounding area. There is a café at the tower. If you are planning to visit, check in advance whether the café is currently open. The information centre, observation tower and knight-themed playgrounds serve as different points of interest within the Schlossberg complex.

Protected nature and habitats

Parts of the Schlossberg are designated nature and bird sanctuaries. They provide a habitat for numerous songbird species, including some that are rare. There are also birds of prey and owls, woodpeckers and small mammals. Nature is therefore more than just a backdrop to a visit to the Schlossberg; it is a defining feature of the area. Alongside the history of the castle, protecting a variety of habitats is a key focus here.

Regenstauf Bird and Environmental Station

The Regenstauf Bird and Environmental Station offers another way to experience nature. It is located right by the river in the Regentalaue floodplain and offers a variety of opportunities to explore nature. It also serves as a care centre for native wild birds and an environmental education centre for all ages. The station thus combines nature exploration with wild bird care and educational activities.

Tours focus on birds cared for at the station, including eagle owls, peregrine falcons and white storks. The “Microcosm of Nature” programme offers fascinating glimpses through a microscope. The station also offers events and tours for adults, and children’s birthday parties can be held there too. The different formats range from observing birdlife to exploring tiny structures under a microscope.

Plan seasonal excursions

The Zille Marienthal adds a seasonal boat trip as another excursion option. It operates from May to the end of September. If you are planning to include the trip in your itinerary, check the specific dates for your chosen travel period. This seasonal information helps you decide whether to include it based on when you are travelling.

The different attractions can help you decide where to stay in Regenstauf: the Schlossberg focuses on history, views and protected nature, while the Bird and Environmental Station combines wild bird care with environmental education. The Zille Marienthal adds a seasonal option. You can take these interests into account when planning your trip and decide which ones you want to shape your stay.
